Gigabyte cooling performance *REP POST*

That's direct cooling as it has a heatsink on it. Indirect is when there is nothing on it and it relies on airflow across the naked vrm's to cool them. This is the worst method and very often results in throttling, all because the manufacturer can't be bothered or is too tight to cool them with a heatsink. I would never buy a card that uses indirect cooling.
It's also more expensive BOM wise, that's why some manufacturers cheap out.
 
Well I have had my Gigabyte 1080 G1 Gaming since launch on a brand new 6850K build and whilst it isn't the best overclocker in the world, it runs at its boost clocks comfortably and quietly. Gigabyte did a good job on the card and acoustics and I am very happy with the temp :)

I have the same card and I agree with what Gregster says above. Great card, haven't had a single problem. Temps at all sits at around 70-72 but that is more down to my case being more designed on aesthetics than cooling. Even at high RPM the noise levels are fine and once the gaming stops the temps drop rapidly.

It eats up anything I throw at it and ask for more. I'd recommend the card to anyone if they asked simple as that.

The g1 rx 480 has a reputation for running hot compared to the others. There's no xtreem gaming versions of amd cards either. If the lowly 950 can have an extreme gaming version, I'd expect the 470 and 480s to have one as well.

Also, I was considering buying the g1 fury but there wasn't a review to be found for the card.

The RX480 runs hotter than expected, our 480 G1 indeed could use a bit of work.
What you say about NVIDIA is not that we focus on them, but in some markets it's hard for us to compete with "others" that may have additional benefits/help.

Thanks for the response an that's quite insightful. It's sounds like AMD have preferred board partners that they give preferential treatment to.
 
Yeah looks like Gigabyte did a good job on the cooling, thermal pads all where they should be. Checked the very same pics a few days ago.

Sounds good. Have you had a play with that Gigabyte VGA - XTREME ENGINE software app? Any ideas how it compares to the MSI Afterburner / EVGA Precision?

Actually evga is 3cm longer.... 172 vs 169mm

Design also uses heat pipes and isn't just a block of aluminum on top.

Length is not important they are both small it's the height that makes the giga not compatible with a number of itx cases, my inwin 901 included. 111.15mm on the SC v giga 131 mm

The SC 1060 uses copper heat pipes.


That is a ridiculous design for itx.

Jumping on EVGA and their recent mistake in this manner is fairly lame. The build quality of my gigabyte 780 was less than impressive. Another company to avoid for components :D

Oh, and orange as a color theme when motherboards, RAM and just about every other PC part is barely ever available in orange - brilliant.

SC has pipes but base model doesn't :/


Can only guess they went taller for less length or that there's more VRMs.
 
The heatpipes on the ITX OC are quite a bit longer than those on the EVGA SC and extend into that top part of the shroud, so it's not just an aesthetic choice. Probably one of the reasons why it runs so much cooler. I suppose you can't have everything. There has to be a trade-off somewhere between cooler size and temperatures.

At least Gigabyte actively cool the VRM circuitry. EVGA's 10 series are now tainted because they lack the thermal pads as standard.

Their resale value will also be affected - people will be worried that it will overheat and if the thermal pad 'mod' has been done, then you run the risk of the original owner damaging the card in some way, invalidating the warranty.

Though I completely understand EVGA owners are going to be rather desperate to trivialise and play down this issue - it's only human nature after spending extra money on a 'premium' brand.

Heck, even the founders edition cards have thermal pads to properly cool the VRM's etc! :

NVIDIA really were serious when they said the founders edition cards used premium components ;)

Asus has same issue with strix version of the 470 and 460. PCB is smaller but heat pipes stick out
 
Nice informative post. Just unfortunate for me you are not the somewhat mute Evaga rep. as I do not have a gigabyte card.
