Gigabyte Z170X-Gaming 7 Owners Thread.

Hi all,

I have just bought the Gigabyte Z170 Gaming 7 board from OCUK (great service, thanks!) but am now having second thoughts about it. It's still unopened etc., so I'm not too worried, but I'm looking for a bit of reassurance to be honest. This will be my first PC build - it's purely for casual gaming with (hopefully) pretty graphics.

I thought I'd done all the research I possibly could have before committing to this board. I was initially looking at the Gigabyte Gaming 7, the ASUS Z170-A, the ASUS Z170 Pro Gaming and the ASUS ROG Maximus Hero VIII. I narrowed it down to the Hero and the Gaming 7, and ended up going with the Gaming 7 after reading too many horror stories about ASUS support / RMA (first build nerves), and a lot of praise for Gigabyte.

However, I've just got to purchasing the RAM for my upcooming build, and this is what's scared me. After Googling for some recommendations, the keyword 'memory' just unlocked a plethora of bugs with this board. There's a huge number of threads/posts about the issues, and it's really put me off opening my box.

From my research, it looks as though problems arise with any RAM that's not natively 2133MHz, but even then it's hit and miss. All the while, the Gaming 7 approved memory modules document (from Gigabyte) shows a whole load of 2400MHz+ sticks.

So, two questions:

1. What's the deal with these memory bugs plaguing this board?
2. What RAM do people here use, and was it a simple plug 'n' play process?

Cheers,
Andy

Not seen any memory bugs in this thread. I had an issue where I needed to wait for a bios upgrade before I could run the xmp .. but that was my fault as I purchased unsupported memory.

Just seen that rev 1.1 has indeed been released with fixes for the widespread RAM issues. Unfortunately OCUK is shipping the outdated revision 1.0 so I will be returning it.

Thanks for the replies.

Can I be in the club, I don't have a gaming 7 but instead have a GA-Z170X- GAMING G1.

Also I am using the G-skill trident z modules and they are great no issues. The only thing is I had to set the voltage manually for the memory to work.

is there a switch that is stopping the bios from being flashed on this motherboard or a setting somewhere ?

purchased a m2 ssd and its not being detected so thought maybe a bios flash will help but it just says bios version F7 after the flash, yet it is meant to be F20.

thats with Q Flash

@BIOS through windows simply doesnt update it.

purchased it in June...if thats any help :p
