Girl killed by pit bull terrier

dogs like this should not be in peoples homes.

the girl died terribly. all this bull about ' they don't normally do that, normally lovely dogs, can't blame the dog '. i don't trust them one bit. dumb, aggressive, and much bigger than a kid that can't defend itself.

really sad to see.

If you were the parent and didnt trust the dog, or thought it might be left with it you wouldnt of let it happen.
Its a mistake they made, and sadly are suffering terribly because of it.

Compare the number of deaths by dog and then by cars and even by humans themselves. Serial killers and rapists etc kill more people than the odd dog attack. So therefore why arn't they just 'destroyed' on sight? It's just people have an image in their mind that they are a fighting dog, are vicious and rip people apart for nothing. Something must have been done to the dog for it to happen, maybe the child was grabbing onto the dog continuously? I know how i'd feel if something was dragging me about, i'd boot. And when you're in a serious fight you don't stop and thing 'Oh, I better not hurt him badly!' It's just kill kill kill!

On sky news, a reporter in the area said that a neighbour in the street said she complained to the council about the dog because it had been causing problems in the street and nothing was done about it.

Also the dog hasnt been confirmed as what type of breed it is.

Because no matter how low you consider a rapist or whatever to be, they're still human. A dog is just an animal, never mind all your man's best friend stuff.

Sure... because these dogs never snap without cause. Even if that were the case, what's the deal with nice, placid dogs? How often do you hear of labradors killing kids? Not too often. Why should people own dogs that have such a short fuse and such a propensity for violence that they kill children?

The point is, it was a child. I have a baby, and have to deal with her sticking her fingers in my eyes, up my nose, scratching me... She doesn't know any better, but I do, so I just have to put up with it till she learns. God help you if you ever have children with that sort of attitude. And before you say "but of course I wouldn't hurt a child" - sure, maybe you wouldn't, but a vicious dog would, obviously.

What a waste of a life and a dog, why do people even think about having such dangerous dogs near children, not only did it attack the child it attacked a woman aswell, I think there should be a need for a licence for any dog.

only 4 months ago we had this

So it just attacked them did it? Walked in the room and ripped the crap out of them both. It must have been provoked, it can't just be hungry.

And about the last paragraph, it's nothing like that. Ofcourse if it's your child you would be protective over her. But if some random bloke just came into your home and started messing about with you you'd get frustrated. Same with the dog. Some random is in his territory and annoying it. It can't really say 'Excuse me dear child, please stop.' It would have growled early on or moved away but since it's just a child it wouldn't have thought anything of it.

And another thing, you arn't thinking outside the box. You're seeing it like 'Dog just killed two people for a laugh!' It's exactly what papers do to make you think certain things and manipulate you into thinking things. It even says the police arn't sure what has happened. The kid could have been smacking it with a toy hammer for all we know.

Because you know how your child is, if you had a dog, regardless of breed you would not leave them alone for this very reason as neither know better.

I can't believe you are defending the dog here. I'm not always of the opinion that a reaction has to be provoked, ie, the kid teased the dog or something like that. There are certain breeds of dog, that these attacks always happen with. It's such a needless death when it can be prevented by not having them around small kids. Give a dog a chance and it'll kill small things, it's down to instinct. No matter how much a dog is domesticated, bring it out into a field full of birds or rabbits and watch it chase them all down and if it catches one of them it'll kill it.

How my child is? I assure you, all 6 month olds are this way. That wasn't my point anyway.

My point is... Have we ever had a story like this with a labrador? Ever? Please, someone tell me. I'm not sure a labrador would be sufficiently provoked by a child to kill it. That's not to say it's OK to leave a child and a dog together unsupervised, but you also shouldn't have to keep them entirely separate, as it seems you have to with pitbulls and the like.

Labrador attack.

The point is, as a dog owner and a parent. You have a responsibility to manage the interaction between pet and child. Some dogs may be regarded as dangerous due to the breed, but its the deed that is wrong.
A Staffie was bred as a fighting dog but is regarded as being one of the best with small children.

What happened is terrible, we dont know what happened as we were not there, the child should have been correctly supervised with the dog or kept apart full stop.

Exactly, it's like training a dog to fight, hunt and kill then putting it in a nursery full of children. Something is going to happen. It's not it's fault it has a short fuse and other things as it's traits, it's just the way things are. It's not the dogs fault for doing what it's meant to do.

Even so the child may have had experience with other dogs and gotten away with wacking it about like a toy. Like humans, everyones tempers differ.

Thanks for finding that. Nevertheless, I think we all know it's pretty rare.

Oh your right. Thing is I think kids and dogs are alike. How they grow up and behave is very dependant on the upbringing. But if something happens any dog will do something bad, same as people do bad stuff.

I think its right the dog has been put down, but all of this could probably been avoided with the right monitoring of the situation and environment.

Has anyone blamed the dog exactly?

you may find this interesting:

In all, the city logged more than 900 bites against people and other pets since 2003, including 626 traced to a specific dog. Of those, 169 bites were blamed on pit bulls. That's more than the number of bites by German shepherds (69), Labrador retrievers (58) and rottweilers (34) combined.

Labs actually rank higher than Rotties in this report.

Dogs are not vicious, some owners are irresponsible.

But then pit balls are the ugliest of all dogs. God knows why anybody would want one.

It is perhaps worth considering the owner's intention for purchasing the dogs. The type of owner who chooses a pit bull is probably more likely to train such a dog to be vicious.

absolutely. They're seen as some kind of status symbol which is just stupid and are bred in such a way as to make their owners look 'hard' :(
