Girl killed by pit bull terrier

And another thing, you arn't thinking outside the box. You're seeing it like 'Dog just killed two people for a laugh!' It's exactly what papers do to make you think certain things and manipulate you into thinking things. It even says the police arn't sure what has happened. The kid could have been smacking it with a toy hammer for all we know.

I'm not really sure what you're trying to argue in your last few posts.

The point is, if there is a significant chance of a certain type of dog snapping because a child is doing something like smacking it with a toy, then these breeds should be kept away from children.

The dog doesn't know any better, the child doesn't know any better. So keep the two away from each other.

And whoever was responsible for leaving the dog and child together, (presumably the Aunt/Uncle) should have some sort of action brought against them.

I'm simply argueing that it's not the dogs fault. Where as people are making the mistakes of putting the children with them.

That's what everyone has been saying all through the thread mate, it's the humans error not the animals. :)

True, dogs (just like humans) are products of their upbringing.

Bring them up to be a vicious little **** and that's exactly how they will turn out.

Labs actually rank higher than Rotties in this report.

yet it doesnt give any indication of how many of each dog in the city

labradors seem pretty popular here for instance so theres a higher chance of an attack being reported simply because there are more of them, different country but may well be the same pattern there also(cant even remember the last time i seen someone with a pitbull terrier or a rottweiler, its all spaniels and labradors around here along with those farty little dogs that old people have :P)

if pit bull terriers were on par with numbers of the more popular dogs you would probably see that figure skyrocket this is ofcourse assuming the pit bull terrier isnt a popular dog in san fransisco

EDIT: just found this, kinda nothing to do with this at all just made me laugh when i was searching for something, i can see that being made into an owned pic or something

I don't think that is quite what Richdog said :)

I believe that dogs, especially certain breeds are a danger to children (and adults for that matter) regardless of how they have been brought up.

Ive not read this thread fully but was the dog an American Pit Bull Terrier? I was brought up with 2 in my family home when I was a child, they were brothers and we had them from puppies when I was about 6/7 years old around the same time there was lots of news about them, as the dog act had just been introduced. I remember at the time, we had the dogs chipped, insured, registered with the local police, they were tatooed with a code on the inside of their rear leg and iirc we had a licence of some sort.
I used to play with them for hours alone and had no problems, they looked after me but if they were to turn, I would have been dead tbh.
They had unbelievable power, the local vet wouldnt see them even though they never once went for him. We took one for a checkup and the vet insisted on using his mussle to close the mouth, so we took ours off (which was only ever used for visiting the vets or going outside) and put his on, the dog then barked and ripped his clean off.
When we got them, the vet gave us a videotape showing one dog pulling a train using a rope attached to a harness around its back.
My uncle who was a fair size bloke was the only person who could take both for a walk at the same time and they managed to shear a metal chain once when they pulled.
My experience of them on awhole was a very good one, they were very loyal to me, I used to jump on their backs etc but as I said had they turned I would have stood no chance, they were near 9/10stone of muscle each.
My parents wouldnt leave the dogs alone with any other child other than myself.
Ive got no problem with people keeping such dogs as pets but there must be lots of checks/licences in place. The total cost of ownership for our 2 must have run into the thousands before taking food etc into account.
I probably wouldnt get another if I was to get a dog, mainly because of the hassle involved in having one even though it is my favourite breed.

edit: just reading up on the 1991 dog act, we must have had them before it was introduced as we had all sorts of hassle during that time.

I usually get flamed for my opinion regarding these dogs but I'll say it again:

These type of dogs have been ILLEGAL to breed and sell for nearly 15 years now so nobody should have one.

They are bred for fighting and are usually owned by inadequate people with smaller, less developed brains than the dogs themselves; these irresponsible people seem to think that owning one of these animals gives them the same reputation as the dog ...... ie don't **** with me!

If I had my way, the owners would be put down at the same time as the dogs.

They are NOT family pets.
They are ILLEGAL.

Only a moron would want to own one.

Dogs are like any other living thing. They have their own thoughts, and no matter how friendly they seem, they really can't be trusted.

We've had a fair amount of cases like these this year, children being attacked by dogs. People are either going to have to keep a closer eye on their pets, or we're going to end up with another licence imposed on us.

I would hate to see the end of the "family" pet, however if it saves lives then it's going to be necessary.

Could I take that as insult?
We had 2, granted it was just before the dog act.
We didnt own them for the repuatation, our 2 were family pets.
The only time I ever saw the dog get aggressive was when someone tried to break into our shed and we let him into the garden. Needless to say the lad screamed and scrambled back over the fence.
Said that, I wouldnt want just anybody owning that kind of dog.
