Gnome 3.0

Got the Fedora 15 beta coming down to try out, looking forward to seeing how GNOME 3 works in practice.

I'm not some old curmudgeon ffs :p I've tried 'docks' before, I don't like them.

I'll see how it works in practice :)

Probably the biggest advantage of the OS is you can always run KDE or Xfce if you don't like "docks" and prefer a more "traditional" look :)

I've been dabbling with OpenSUSE 11.4 in VM - but using the Gnome version.

BTW - I am a old curmudgeon LOL :)

Of course, I've been using Linux/Unix for nearly 12 years now, I'm aware you can change your desktop environment. My house also smells of rich mahogany, and I own many leather bound books :p

My problem/point is that these are some pretty big changes to how we work, and there's no on or off switch. I don't want to use KDE or Xfce, they're both cack IMO, and if I don't like this new iteration of Gnome then I'm going to be pretty stuck.

Keep in mind the legacy mode (fallback / classic) will see work on it, so it won't be the end of the world entirely. I suspect there will be enough demand to keep it ticking over.

Although ,unlike others here, I still have not given Gnome3 or the upcoming Unity a whirl yet ... I think I'd rather go the Gnome3 route.

IMO ... Shuttleworth's vision seems firmly aimed towards the tablet/touch screen market. Time will tell but I wish that the Gnome development team had pulled this one out of the bag earlier and so got it into 11.04 :)

I've been playing with openSUSE 11.4 (KDE) all week and fell in love with it. I've not used KDE since my early PCLOS days (years ago), and have stuck to Gnome ever since. I was set to install openSUSE KDE on my desktop (after playing with it in Parallels on my MBP); but after 30 mins in Fedora 15 beta with Gnome 3 I've found a new favourite OS and DM. :D

It's super fast, the fonts appear much nicer/smoother than in openSUSE (years ago my experience was the opposite, and I love the usability improvements in Gnome 3. :) A definite win for me, and for Fedora. I used it from F4 through 8 and moved away with F9 (didn't like it) but I'm back now for sure!

I always thought KDE 4 was wrong and Gnome 3 and Unity are definitely a step in the wrong direction.

What is this obsession with change.... I always advocate the use of Linux for everything but playing games. Why? because its uniform, stable, robust and if you want looks you'd just install compiz....

Now what is going to happen is that we'll have a love it or leave it again as we did with KDE4.... and people will start looking for alternatives, if I loose gnome 2 :( I'm going XFCE.

Make it better, optimise it, strip it, but don't reinvent the damn thing.

gnome 3 was always a vertical niche ! and it will remain so.

edit: omg XFCE 4.8 is sweet

Has anybody tried to load Gnome 3 Fedora into VM VirtualBox. The reason why I ask, every time I try I get this error message, yet there is nothing wrong with my video.

What version of VirtualBox is it? Only the latest and greatest, version 4.08 will work with it, and consequently you need to make sure you install the guest additions from the VirtualBox ISO, inserted via the devices menu. You'll also need to do sudo yum install kernel kernel-headers kernel-devel before installing the guest additions (including kernel there sorts out a version inconsistency whereby the guest additions installer looks for files relating to the kernel the F15 installer ships with when actually a later version is installed by kernel-devel). That is the exact process I used today when installing F15 in VBox. Let me know how you get on doing that.

I got the same error on my Laptop (not VM) which had a perfectly adequate GPU, haven't yet found a solution :(
What GPU does it have, and what drivers are/were you using? I've got GNOME 3 working with the nVidia proprietary drivers but despite reasonable effort cannot get it working with the nouveau drivers. I haven't got an ATi card to try with.

Upgraded VB to 4.8, and tried the rest with no luck.
