At what point do things fail and with what error?

It's an Intel GMA X4500HD, I haven't spent much time looking into it though so maybe the Intel drivers just suck ***, but I think it should meet the min requirements

Surprised the noveau drivers aren't working for you, hopefully things will improve over the next few months though.

I don't have any experience with Intel graphics, sorry

I'm not; according to http://nouveau.freedesktop.org/wiki/FeatureMatrix the 3D features for my card (GTX 470) are not completely implemented. The annoying thing is that the nouveau drivers support KMS but not GNOME3, while the nVidia drivers are the other way round; I can have one but not the other (it would be nice to be able to be able to use ttys at native resolution and to switch to them without the wait).

Pretty sure that you need to install 'gnome-shell'. Had the same issue on my Intel based HP laptop when I upgraded from version 2 to version 3 on my Arch install.
