Hey,

I've just spotted a 205 XS on ebay for £46 - it has no tax or MOT, and woukd need some work doing, however the bodywork is good on it.

Is it worth buying a knackered older 205, or save a bit more and buy a decent one?

Thanks :)

Go for it. Worse case scenario is that it's unfixable in which case you split it for parts on ebay and make a tidy profit :)

No, it's a shed. 205's are all rusty bangers of doom now.

Erm...do you actually know anything about 205's? hardly any of them rust..only a few.

I thought 205's were rusty bangers of doom?

I'd love a GTi, but the insurance isn't really that reasonable :(

Go for it. Easily a profit in there and you might learn something along the way ;)

Fox - the XS is considered nearly as fun as the GTI - a future classic also imho.

There is no way the XS will be a future classic. It will fade away into nothingness until it's almost completely forgotton and all remaining examples are dead.

The GTi is a future classic, but not the XS.

Why ask all the biased internets who feel good about imposing their views on others?!

Go with your own heart and judgement. Same goes for those who need their parents consent. If you can't make the decision yourself then are you truely capable of owning it? If you can and you know, then why let other people hold up your decision.

You could have "the worst car ever" according to hearsay and the media, but in the end you may love it to bits.

His judgement can be enhanced by listening to the opinions of others. Some opinions are biased, some are worthless, others are based on prejudice but some are totally useful - by hearing everyones opinion, he is better placed to make his own judgement and follow his heart :)

Aye, I realise that mate. But he asks weather he should go for it, not what people thought of the car.

For £50, he could probably sell it on for more with a little cash injection for a bit more if he sold it privately, and learn some things too. But he didn't ask that, but that would be my opinion on the matter.

I'm just worried some people take others word as gospel sometimes and make the wrong decisions. Scary thought when it comes to cars.

I disagree - nostalgia is a crazy thing. a lot of people bought the XS as a first/early car as it is the "baby GTI" - affordable, fast and fun.

Westy - go for it, it's only a few pence and will be experiance working on a car

Go for it mate. evan if its a shed and needs work doin the parts are so cheep and the things are so simple to fix.
dont worry about rust, they where all galvanised.

if it is completly unmendable its £50 and youve got a car worth of spares for the next one :D

205's are addictive,i now have two.

well there's just over 2 hours left on the auction, and its still at £46.

there's 9 bids, i'm thinking that people are watching it, and waiting for it to get to the final few minutes...

I'm very tempted to buy it, just for a project!

edit: seeing as its got no tax or MOT, how would I go about getting it home? tow it with a solid bar i suppose?

Can't really go wrong for that price, if the worst comes to the worst you could get almost that much back by breaking it for parts. Go and have a look, see what TLC it needs. It's have to be quite a lot for it not to be worth that much though. As I'm sure you know remember to check the beam;).

Fox have you ever driven an XS? Have you even been in an XS? How is the above coment even remotely useful? As has been pointed out 205s are very good for not rusting as cars that age go. They won't set the world on fire but they define nippy and they handle quite nicely. They're much easier to work on than a GTi which is important at this price range.

I remember, they don't have AC or CC or electric anything so they're heaps aren't they?
