Godzilla - Trailer

I thought it was awful, one of the worst films of the year for me. God awful acting and plot. Terrible, cheesy script. Wouldn't recommend at all, dragged on.

Ever seen the old Japanese Godzilla film?

A lot of people slating it have seem to view Godzilla with rose tinted glasses that it's a being of destruction. In fact, watching it today, I felt like actually how I felt when I watched it 20 years ago. (Except it's CGI rather than a man in suit)

Wasn't expecting much of it, just wanted something fun but it surpassed it with potential in the future. A bit like Jaws, you get glimpse of Godzilla, and at the final, you get a proper scene and fight. Something the previous Godzilla failed at.

Keep an eye out when the kid returns back to his room, I saw the name Mothra, a link for the future sequel or a homage? Who knows. I enjoyed it.

6.5/10

Godzilla looked fantastic, but i didn't care for the lead actor at all or for the forced attempts to make me care about him or wifey. Felt like half the film was just US army vehicles rolling in, troops jumping out, choppers/planes flying by.

Most of the set pieces were ace though, and the finale was a lot of fun to watch.

Going to see it on Tuesday. Sounds like your initial reviews are about what I expected. Oh well lol

It is what it is I guess.

The Guardian slated it, it says visuals are great, Gozilla is scary but the humans story is just rubbish.

Saw this last night. This review is pretty much spot on... it was a good effort and I DID enjoy it, but it's more a showcase of what can be improved in future. The human story wasn't "badly acted" per se, it just had little impact or meaning. The monster battles were definitely very underwhelming in terms of action... and Godzilla was quite badly represented I thought, for an "Apex predator" he performed pretty badly.

However overall definitely a solid 7/10.

PS: Lots of people were clapping in the cinema, especially at the finale... argghhhhh...

Just seen it, best summed up as a human drama with "stuff" happening in the background for 95% of the time. The other 5% is what people actually wanted to see.

Still enjoyed the 5% a lot (Nuclear Breath!!!) but the drama portion left me unmoved although the 1st 10minutes was very good -

The nurse/wife had little to do other than look up and act scared.

The military stuff was very technically inaccurate through-out and poorly scripted although almost every film has this TBH (listen to or use Advisors!)

Another monster movie shot almost entirely at night to make up for the creatures CGI looking poor in daylight.

Unbelievably poor scripting at times - Nevada, whole side of mountain missing and 300ft monster walking away, no-one on the search team notices!!!

Never an explanation given for where Godilla has been hiding for the past 50+ years???

I mean it was ok, but sometimes I just wish they'd give the audience what they really want from a film like this, rather than trying to create high art all the bloody time.

I paid to see a big ****ing lizard. He was barely in it and the scenes he was in were so dark it was hard to see him.

One of the few things Pacific Rim got right. Godzilla is such a good character, this had a little too much Cloverfield about it for my liking.

Wasnt expecting great things, but I did enjoy Pacific Rim, so from my perspective monster movies can be done well.

This on the other hand was utter garbage, I would even go as far to say that Emmerich's 1998 incarnation was better.

The only plus point for me was the 'look' of Godzilla.

The other two beasties in the film were very 'Cloverfieldy'

2/10

Not seen any incarnations of Godzilla but am going to see this tonight. Am expecting the stereotypical blockbuster type film, not particularly bright stuff but entertaining nonetheless.

This was a Godzilla film vs a big lizard called Godzilla (98). That said, I left a little disappointed in terms of wanting a bit more filler for the backstory/Monarch/origin-y stuff (I didn't actually mind the limited screen time the big G got) - it got glossed over dead quick. I think giant monster stuff suffers when it gets too removed from human scale (Pacific Rim did this a lot) in the way it's shot/framed so this did a good job for the most part.

The problem with any creature feature is you need something human to empathise with - I think Super 8 did as good a job as anyone's done recently but this was... yeah it's hard to care about the characters much. I think if this does well at least we can expect any sequel to free the reigns a bit more in terms of big things smashing stuff up, but I wouldn't say this was bad - it was a pretty competently done without being amazing, so another 6.5-7/10 here.

I'm off to see it in IMAX style in the next hour

yeah i agree - it was reasonable but super-8 did the characters better.

Bleh imo.

I would have put money on the big battle conveniently being at night and surprise surprise it was, maybe it was just me but I found it hard to make out just wtf was going on for a lot of it, essentially a load of dark shapes moving around with the occasional glowing eye so you could figure out what you were looking at. I paid to see a big lizard kicking seven shades out of 2 other big things, not shadow puppets with friggin red eyes dancing around in the dark for 15 minutes. I suppose doing it at night essentially cuts down on the amount of cg work and they can get away with a lot of it being much lesser quality than if it were during the day and there for scrutiny.

The "big reveal" also dragged its ass getting there, it was glimpse, glimpse, glimpse..ok getting old now, dragged that out far too long.

Would have been a better movie if it had focused a bit more on the actual title character (omg what a concept) you also really didn't get much of a military interaction vs the monsters which is virtually a staple of Godzilla movies, anything that did happen you just saw the remnants at the end of it instead of any real pitched battles raging.

Coulda been much better than it was, I've no doubt it'll rake the money in though.

Thoroughly enjoyed the movie overall, I felt the 2 hours flew in.

The 'final battle' at the end didn't show very much though, was certainly hoping for more of a fight than that. Still, I like how Godzilla killed the last monster :)

Compared to the old Godzilla films this one felt like it was focusing too much on the people trying to survive the monster attacks.

When Godzilla finally appeared I thought finally, we get to see the king of monsters in action, but nope, fast foward to the aftermath. Finally the last battle was more of what I was expecting but it didn't feel like it was the main focus.

But overall, I enjoyed it, much better than the first american attempt. I'm hoping there will be sequels, this film overall felt more like an introductional film to hopefully more Godzilla films. I want more monster fights!

Just got back from seeing it. Very enjoyable! :)
Absolutely nothing we haven't all seen before though and very much like pacific rim. Predictable monster roars for no apparent reason, like godzilla right at the very end before heading home (that all started with the t-rex in jurassic park) to staying very quiet when a monster's head is hovering next to you (jurassic park again), to a jaw ripping scene (stolen from king kong), etc. Not that I didn't still enjoy those cliches :D Godzillas face just isn't scary though and he didn't convey any real sense of anger or menace.

8/10 I guess.

cant search for 2D or 3D so anyone tell me if its worth imax 3d, 3d or 2d?

thinking of taking son today to watch it

EDIT: booked it for 3d at local cineworld :)

I really enjoyed it, ok the acting and script aren't going to win any oscars but for a summer stompy monster blockbuster film it did what it said on the tin. 8/10 from me
