Going batty in Batley (or comic strip strikes again).

I think they should be given the right to protest. Its important that we allow this diverse and tolerant ecosystem we've built to not only be seen in practice, but to flourish.
Give it a few hours and they'll be burning effigies of the headmaster.

The situation seems strange. We don't know what this image showed.

Are they complaining that an image was shown, or that the image in question is making fun of the Prophet Muhammad?

If no pictures are allowed of Muhammed then how do we know pictures of Muhammad are actually pictures of Muhammed? You could stick up a picture of Michael Jackson and say he was Muhammed and folk would take offence. Really, if we’re talking about a picture of an Arab type fella with a beard then it could be anyone. Even saying that the picture is of Mohammed doesn’t mean anything given that it’s such a common name - could be any one of a billion Mohammeds.

The fact someone drove from England to Glasgow to murder a shopkeeper for handing out Christmas cards to his customers and posting a Easter message on his Facebook I'm surprised he isn't dead already.

Unbelievable that these people are so brainwashed and ****** up that they turn to murder and beheadings over something that can't even be seen, heard or touched.

The image was a cartoon from the now notorious Charrlie Hebdo magazine. I'm currently listening to James O'Brien on LBC who says that the teacher in question was teaching his pupils about blasphemy. And the question James O'Brien is asking is how do you teach or demonstrate blasphemy without showing examples.

The teacher seems to have been extremely naive as to the consequences.

Oh, I didn't realise it was one of those images.

I don't know why blasphemy is being taught in an RE class. Isn't it about understanding different religions? I'm a Christian. But if I was learning about Islam I'd be wanting to understand why Muslims believe in Islam.

There are some very bad passages in one of the religious books about Jesus. But what would it serve to be bringing them up?

I don't agree with the confrontational attitude the teacher is getting as for all we know this might be part of the vague RE lessons instructions, and he's interpreted it in a certain way. I don't think it's helpful to immediately assign malicious intent on a person without understanding their side of things.

This is the result of the society people wanted, multiracial, multicultural values. In that society it means we have to be sensitive that there will be opposing views to what was once traditional views.

I have to wonder why a non-Muslim is teaching about Islam? What qualification does he have in any religion? If he's not a religious person then he's not going to know how to properly teach the subject.

I wont ever forget that story, the guy fled persecution in his homeland because he was from a minority sect of Islam, he then gets murdered here...by another muslim :(

Whatever your religious beliefs are killing someone over something as daft as social media posts or Christmas / Easter greetings is unforgivable.

The fact he drove hundreds of miles. He had plenty of time and opportunity to back out. He had a large knife on him and he took it anyway knowing the consequences.

These fanatics cannot be reasoned with. Their own community helps shelter them. Surely this guy will have openly said some dodgy things among his own community and they would have just brushed it under the carpet. The fact he left voicemail messages shows he wasn't exactly covert about his views and beliefs.

Imagine losing a loved one in a senseless act like this in this day and age?

The muslims in the area said that Asad Shah wasn't a REAL muslim

That's the problem with the different sects. There's guys who believe in a version of Islam and anything else isn't Islam. There's a nutter on YouTube who says his own parents aren't Muslim because he moved to a different sect and what they believe isn't true Islam. They have various sects all with slightly different beliefs and views. It's the same with a lot of religions but usually the consequences are never as bad.
