Going flying for the first time!

I'd absolutely love to fly a plane, I don't have the money yet but if I'll ever get 10k spare, getting flying lessons will be almost the first thing I'll do :D.

By the way... on commercial aircraft - the autopilot is engaged at around 1000ft after takeoff. A computer system sequences the engines at take off also to prevent the pilots giving them too much thrust at once and hence causing the engine(s) to fail. It's a bit like trying to do 150MPH in 1st gear I guess. lol !

It's an amazing feeling. I fly small aircraft buy can only dream of the big daddy's. That's really where computers come into their own.

We never did hear exactly what happened to that A340 Air France flight.
Well perhaps they know, but just didn't tell us. The aircraft was transmitting fault codes back to base well before it crashed.

I think about these sorts of thngs all the time as I love jets :)

Here.... your in the Netherlands? Can you not take lessons out of Schiphol or is that even possible? lol ! Probably not but I know Belfast international has a small runway reserved for such a thing where I am.

It's about £80 - £100 an hour for lessons. Good craic but :)

I did this recently in Exeter and it is amazing, if a little expensive. Went up for 30mins as a birthday present, hope to do it a lot more when I am rich a famous.

Does the International still do flying lessons? Thought they closed that bit down awhile ago. Closest to me is the Ulster Flying Club in Newtownards.

How many hours does it take to pass? Also to rent a plane like the OP how much does this cost and what about fuel? Any other cost involved?

I would love to get into this as a hobby and lifestyle, just need to work out how much the dam thing will cost me!!!!!: D

PPL is 45hours i think minimum. NPPL could be less, although that is restricted to UK airspace and only in daylight:

Wikipedia: NPPL Limitations said:
NPPL holders may not:

* fly non-UK registered aircraft
* fly outside UK territorial waters
* qualify directly for night flying or Instrument Flying Rules

NPPL would be cheaper, but its mainly aimed at people not wanting to make a career out of flying.

Renting cost will depend on the place you are renting from, you will probably need to pay landing fees as well, although it could be bundled into the cost of the rental when you organised it.

Nice one,
would be awesome to learn how to fly. One of the things i will have to think about doing in the future!

45 hours wow ok so easily well over £5,000 to get the licence? I live near LBA and there is a school there I may have to take a look and get some more info!

Probably looking at least £7-8k in reality.

Different places will have different prices, but thats around the norm tbh.

Where'd you hear that?! There's no such thing! And at Aldergrove it was ~£120 to hire a PA28 for an hour back in 2001 when I started my flying training. I doubt it has gotten any cheaper!

i was suprised how easy it is to fly (well with someone else telling you what do do)

look at an ultralight licence, its cheaper and more accessable than full licence, and you still get to fly in a proper plane

cost is about £8000 (to learn and get licence) including a share in a plane and then only £45 an hour to fly when ever you want

ive taken off / flown and landed a c42 ikarus and flown a eurostar ev-97 for a few minuties and it is the most amazing experience

I've done about 25 hours flying and I've just realised there's not one photo of me in an aircraft. :(

Looks like you had a go yourself too, easy isn't it.

Yeah we were up it seemed fairly straight forward to fly it. Cost of hire is around £150 an hour and an extra £10 for a four seater. Don't have to pay while you're on the ground though as that would probably scare people off doing day trips to places.

Ouch thats not cheap! Though if you learn 'early' got the rest of your life which then would be sweet

What do people do then once they have passed their test? Like just rent a plane for the day or buy one (though i can only imagine they are extremely expensive!)

Well i guess it can be like any other hobby. Just do fly once in awhile, take friends out to places etc. Some go on to become instructors at the place were they were taught.

Depends what people can afford/want to do.

You can buy a plane, a number buy them second hand, although i couldn't give you any figures on the price though!

Dunno if Woodgate are still in operation but I did my training with them. They're based at the GA terminal. Their number should be in the yellow pages.

Phoned them last year and was told it was now £160/hr. Just is crazy money. Think I won't get any further than my 22 hours!

Not even sure if Woodgates are still operating or not anymore though.
