Goldring NS1000 issues

Direct to the soundcard is always best, when you start throwing other things between the headphones and the soundcard you start to reduce quality (unless you add an amp then it usually brings out more details than you'd lose). Quality loss shouldn't be percivable in anything more than the cheapest equipment but when you start adding anything that adjusts volume/cheap low quality amps you start to mess directly with the signal which isn't a good thing. I always recommend going either direct from the soundcard, or from the soundcard to an amp and then from the amp to the headphones.
I also found this when connecting my ns1000's to the desktop volume control for my speakers which have a headphone socket, (creative i-trigue 3330's). Sound was crackly and distorted and the volume would jump up and down, theese speakers are known for the latter issue, barely use them now and just connect the headphones direct to the soundcard via an extension cable. Handy for swapping out quickly for the rare occasions were i do use the speakers.

I was going to post here and say I got my NS1000 a few weeks before Xmas from Play also but so far no problems with sound or build, but have found that its actually forming cracks where the headband join is. I also get creaking here and there... Hmmm have people been able to return them a 3/4 months down the line for a refund from Play? Last time I tried to RMA something after the 28 days it took me over 4 weeks as it went back and forth with the Manufacturer and Play about who should be taking care of it.....

My first pair snapped after about 4 months and it was as painless as any refund with Play gets (which is to say a pain in the ass but not a complete disaster)!

Worth trying to grab a refund before they fully snap or should i just use them till they break whilst secretly hoping they don't break

Either RMA them or take steps to stop them breaking. A good strong bit of tape around the cracks should stop them getting worse.

Either way - don't ignore the problem.

Return them ASAP, it won't take long for them to break, a week maybe 2 for mine to go and I didn't even use them that often. Return them, get a refund (if you can) and buy from Superfi.

It would be funny if the ones from SuperFi weren't any different :p

I'm wondering whether to pay the extra, after receiving a refund for my breaking NS1000s from play, to get them from SuperFi or spend some more money and get something better.

problem with that idea is you would have to pay £100+ to get any better and it wont be black and white either. I would suggest using superfi , got mine from there about 2 weeks ago and theres no creaking crackling.

After having 2 pairs of faulty 1000s I was in the same position and rather fed up. You really need to ask yourself if you can justify spending over £100 on a pair of headphones that are probably only marginally better than the NS1000s, for me there was nothing in it due to the amount of time I spend listening to music and I don't really buy much else. I ended up buying some Beyer DT770s which are in my opinion head and shoulders above the NS1000s, but also cost going on 3x the amount :p They are built like a tank though, and well supported (Beyer sell replacement everythings for when they wear out too), don't require an amp although they do benefit from one, they are a fair bit bigger and don't have noise cancelling, however they do isolate a lot better to. Swings and round-a-bouts.

I got an email back from Play today asking me to simply send them back which is shocking as i was expecting them to try and get me to go through Goldring.

I am currently debating about whether to go to Superfi, or get the Sony NC60.

The problem is has anyone had the NS1000 from Superfi for an extended amount of time, as it seems most people have only recently reordered from Superfi.

I was actually considering the Beyers DT770 Pro. They can be had for some £125-130 which is just 2 times as much as NS1000s at SuperFi. I'm still not sure about them having heard that they have a quite bassy sound signature. I would like something neutral sounding like HD600 but these are stupidly priced in the UK :( I guess the best way to do it would be listening to the Beyers beforehand, I might like them after all.

I'm also a bit worried about the amp, I was going to get something better than FiiO E5 soon, possibly FiiO E11 when it's released. I don't think the internal amp on Xonar DG is up to the job with anything but the low budget headphones.

They are more bassy than some headphones I have, but it's a quality bass not the distorted bass you usually assosiate, couple that with the pretty big soundstage and you'll find that the bass doesn't over power anything. For me they are pretty neutral sounding (although plenty of others disagree). If the bass is too much it's nothing a little EQ won't fix.

As for hearing them, if there is nowhere local you could always order them and if you don't like them return them under the DSR, that's what I decided to do and ended up keeping them ;)

After packing up my Goldrings and having to go back to my Bose Triport AE's I am suddenly regretting reordering the Goldrings from Superfi. Despite everyone's 'hate/dislike' of bose products due to their stupid price point, I actually love my Bose Triports which i find sound a lot warmer than the Goldrings, anyone else think I would be crazy to cancel my Goldring to order the Triport AE2's???

If you prefer the sound and can justify the cost (not sure on price, but being Bose...) then go for it, only you can decide if it's the right thing to do for you ;)

I think a lot of people go in uneducated with noise cancelling headphones, they only take out the bassy brash background noises, like fans whirring, slapping a wood panel etc.Put them on with NO music, set the nc on and slap a wood panel/table etc a few times, then turn it off and slap it again, youll hear without nc its bassy, with NC on youll still hear it but the bass is gone. You are supposed to hear the hiss, its how the noise cancelling works in this headset.

I used the noise cancelling of the NS1000's for the first time tonight. Was playing L4D2 with some mates and the mrs walks in with the hoover. Turned the NC on, and the noise disappeared. Felt so nice. It's also handy when the dishwaser is on. Turn on the NC, and the horrible droning noise goes away.

My missus has worked out that she can actually sneak up on me, by not even trying and scare the life out of me. Last night I was playing some old school Medal of Honor Allied Assault and she waited for me to get shot loads and just poked me really fast from behind. Needless to say, it scared me half to death and all she could do was curl up in a ball laughing. Thank god I wasnt playing some old school doom 3 lol!
