Golf Thread

Played at a course I've not played today .. first drive was great straight down the middle, after that I was just pinging them right out bounds with slices or left out of bounds with hooks. Was over my handicap about 8 holes in. Made for a really enjoyable round of golf, don't mind messing up the odd put or the odd duff iron but this was just miserable. Not sure if the first one got in my head and made it worse. I also for the first time hit someone with my ball, my eldest and nephew were a little in front of me to the right waiting for me to hit my drive which hit so far on the toe I don't think it hit any face and it went about half a foot of the ground and straight into my nephew's shin who as you can imagine was taken of his feet. Only saving grace is it was struck **** so wouldn't have to much on it but it did bruise really quickly and oddlt the bruise has gone already within an hour. All the same just awful.

I'm meant to be in two comps this weekend but cancelled them both as if I can't hit off the tee I'll just not enjoy it. I did have a lesson earlier today which I was hitting the driver well(ISH) just leaking a tadge right but would be fairway or first cut. Going to get the foam golf balls out in the garden see if I can get me phone to capture my swing and just hit it slow ensuring I'm doing things right. Like how I hit that far in the toe I don't know, I have been practising not going out to in so maybe I just went in to well still to far in, god knows. At a guess my round today would have finished around 110 which is a long way from the mid 80s I've hit the last 4 rounds. Demoralised and fed up with the sport

Golf is hard :( But yet so addictive :D

Yeh it certainly is hard, just thought i had my drive sorted after having a wobble with it a month or two back. In hindsight i should have just gone to a 7iron or something just to stop the 3 off the tee and i would have been in play at least. In my lesson the pro said i'm my right shoulders coming round to much as it my right foot. My right foot has started almost started over rotating which is putting pressure on my ankle, he's given me some drills to work on, i messaged him about the round he said not to worry and just work on the drill.
Upside is looking at my recorded swing from 2-3 months ago in a lesson and now it is a country mile better.

Played first ever Mixed Foursomes this morning with a friend... She's a very good golfer (5 handicap).... Our team handicap was 3

Next team was 11, then it was 16/18/20 etc....

We shot gross 69 (+2) with 4 birdies for a net -1 (66)......

Not even close - currently leading is -9, (net 58!)...... we are 7th out of 12.

Our gross 69 is 8 shots better than anyone else. Just had to laugh it off. Means we would have to shoot a gross 60 (-7 under) to win.....

Good warm up mind you for tomorrow club championship handicap final - however weather looking rough tomorrow

nipped out with my eldest, played a light hearted matchplay with no recording of the score anywhere. We played 6 holes finishing just as it was becoming a struggle to see. Was a little unsure after yesterdays **** show so used my 5 wood of the tee for the first few holes which went well, finished 5 over through 6 so a little worse than i ahve been but a country mile better than yesterday. I eventually got the driver out and hit some on one of the holes, one a little low and the others went high and straight. On the par 3 i chunked one and hit one almost like a pro (one bounce and stop with an 8 iron about 145 ou) high and straight, really wish my club would get the bloody practise net put up then i can actually practise more than just f'in around in the garden.

Club champion handicap final today... Giving away 8 shots.

Not the best of starts, five down after five. Rescue a half at six. He then cans a 60-footer at the seventh to keep me five down.

Battle back well with pars on eight, nine, ten, eleven which won those holes - Bogey twelve for a half was one down.

However he gets 4 shots in last 6 holes...

Lost thirteen to his shot. Best shot of the day from me was 7 wood at the fourteenth to ten feet. It was playing 210 yards. Won that. Birdied 15th, nearly chipped in for eagle to level match.

Won sixteen with a great four against his shot to leave me one up on 17th. And he made a proper mess of it to hand me the title 2&1.

Really pleased with my mental game after going so far down early.... Buzzing to win a big trophy this year.

I'm the tall one in blue (not the short one )

Congrats @booyaka :)

I played in the Wiltshire Men's Divisional Championship yesterday, this year held at Cumberwell Park which convieniently I play a couple of times a month (although there's 5x 9-hole courses + par 3 so not like it's always the same, but I'm familiar with it all by now), one difference though is I've previously always played it off the 'purple' tees (effectively yellows, 4 sets of tees, blacks forward then purple, white and green) but this comp was off the white tees, not quite the tips but longer than I'm used to and a few new looks to holes really.

With a 17.7 index going in I was division 3 which is stableford and had 19 shots, the tee times were all based off handicap so playing with 2 other div 3 competitors, and interestingly we tee'd off on the 10th hole, or the Orange course. I pretty much instantly started ok, hit a great tee shot (maybe warming up on the range is worthwhile? Who knew...) although that left me in-between clubs, tried to muscle the shorter one and left myself short, ok chip, 2 putt bogey, not bad. Anyway, basically went pretty solidly on the the Orange course, 3 doubles, 3 bogeys, 3 pars for 18 points and onto the Blue. Started par-par, with 2 shots on the second hole \o/ But then it all went wrong.

3rd on the blue is a short par 4 but it's basically a 90-degree dog leg, you need ~200+ yard drive to clear a willow tree at the edge of a lake with the second shot then across the lake to the green, hit a perfect tee shot but hit a poor second, pushed right and short ending up plugged under the lip of the bunker. First bunker shot didn't get the height, hit the lip and ended up in my footprint still under the lip. Second bunker shot got out but only just and rolled back in but at least away from the lip. Thinned the second over the green, gone from a great tee shot to trying to chip in for a point! Hit a great chip, didn't make it though, 2-ish foot but almost isn't good enough. Think that messed me up with the next where I promptly hit my only bad tee shot OB and another blob.

Sorted myself out though and got a par on the next and got told by my playing partner that after he got a bogey on the hole that put me one up after he'd caught me up with my double-blob, didn't realise he was keeping count like that tbh and it kinda gave me that focus I only really seem to get in singles matchplay, which was nice of him :D So yeah, par the next as well and we're back into the swing of things and I'm keeping that 1-shot lead over him, as he said "Can't win if you don't win your group", kept it right up until the very end, par 5 finish, got to the green in 3 but a long way away, hit a decent putt but left myself 2-3 foot, and side note I'd been putting fantastic all day, plenty of great 1 putts, read it as dead straight hit the putt and it turned, like I hit my line and pace was great, it just turned... Tapped in for the bogey but that 3-putt meant I was tied with my new frenemy but as we walked off we thought he'd win (between us) on countback.

But remember what I said about starting on the 10th waaaay up there ^^^ The blue course wasn't our back 9 was it, it was the front 9 officially, and I beat him on the Orange course so we both ended on 38 points but I had the edge on countback.

That 38 points was good enough for second in my division, again on countback to a guy from my club. Amusingly if the 9's were the other way around I still would've ended up second but first and third would've swapped.

Overall great fun day, got a £75 voucher for a pro shop and more importantly after the update my handicap is no 16.9, the lowest it's ever been (previously low was 17.6 March last year thanks to an ESR, at least this time I do have an ESR on the record but I've actually lowered it since getting that exceptional round at Aberdovey with some just solid results so that's good to see :)

went out today, played 16 holes (had to cut it short due to time) mixed back of the tee as seems the norm but some decent shots. We went out with a chap from work who has given us a Nike TW 7 iron to practise with, lovely club.
Really struggle with getting my hips around, i get the idea of shifting a little pushing down into the left leg but it just never feels right pushing down on the left leg, like it doesn't seem to want to help my left hip drop. will have a good look online for some different idea.s

Only played in a little 9 hole mixed comp with my wife on Saturday. I played fairly steady but a lost ball saw me 2 over my handicap for the 9 holes, but my wife continued her good form and we finished with 24 points (betterball format) and we won on count back

I had a putt on the last hole lip out that would have given us another point to win without the count back, but a win is a win I guess

Next weekend is our trip to Eyemouth and Gullane with the mixed couples from our old club - hoping that the weather holds up and my wife can continue her good form

Has anyone been following the Callaway / Good Good fallout after the ad that didn't go down well?

There has been a lot of chat on a US golf forum I am on and some people are talking about boycotting Callaway gear after the events that have happened

Kinda, seems crazy just how much it's blown up frankly... Yes its the whole gender/assault angle, but it's an ad, a really really bad ad but just an ad. The fact that it's led to so much fallout just seems mental to me.

Doesn't really change my view, Good Good are kinda fun but 99% terrible frat boy nonsense that I don't watch, Callaway arguably comes out worse for me cause they must've approved the video and seem to have used it to drop a contract that probably didn't give them the sales boost they wanted out of it.

Another rumour doing the rounds is that Callaway did this to lower their share price value as they are in a buy-back phase and this obviously allows them to buy the shares at a cheaper price

I haven't seen the ad, but the violence connotation and parody of the film Obsession probably shouldn't have made it beyond the approval stage

Some of the responses from the GG team didn't paint a good look from their side, but I do agree that the fallout has been a bit much

Share price angle makes sense and to be fair although its negative press for them both i think the day the advert launched they've both likely had more interest than ever before from just about all demographics. Anyone who had never heard of good good now have and if you asked a newbie or someone who doesn't know golf at all to name a brand callaway would be right up there. I've not tried looking but i suspect the callaway good stuff if they did manage to sell any is now fetching a right ol premium.
For me the advert is more than just the shoving the lass to the floor but the whole advert just had a sinister tone to it, the music, the facial expressions etc so aside from shock factor i have 0 idea what they thought it was doing well. The ad was kinda like a sinister Yorkie bar advert...
My eldest likes watching them on youtube and wears his good good golf cap which on the front just say good which is always funny when he's having an off road :)

Still no golf comps for me at the moment until i am happy enough as i think the pressure of comps every weekend can be a little bit of a drain and ruins the weekend if i don't play well. I've booked a tee time later on after todays comp, doubt i'll get 18 in unless i power walk as the sun is setting really early now.
Friend i play golf with some times reckons my target for next year should be single figures, not sure on how low i want it to drop really as it needs balance between serious and enjoyable.

Penrith golf course with work next Friday, best golfer is +2 worst doesn't have a handicap but around 24>28 ish so be interesting to see how we split the groups up.

My 2p's worth on the Good Good thing.

Advert was in poor taste and not "clever" at all..... Both GG and Callaway are at fault for "authorising" it. GG's initial mealy mouthed apology was pathetic, took too long and missed the mark by a mile.

But as usual these days - the internet gets all frothy about this stuff and it snowballs into something bigger than that.

I do get the feeling there is still more to this in the background with GG / Callaway split.

Played in my locals stableford yesterday, only 9 holes which is a bit meh (they've gone to 9 holes for one of the two comps a month, not great frankly, worse is the 18 hole is Sunday/Monday and given the nights are drawing in and I'm away Sunday I doubt I'll be able to do that), anyway played solidly for the most part, mixture of pars and bogeys from 1-8 until I had a bit of a blow up on the last.

Hit an ok drive, maybe a bit of a 'power fade' but it just exited stage right as soon as it hit the ground, and there's internal OB, took a provisional but just pulled that into the trees left, found the first and sure enough it's OB so job done.

Still some good stuff there and 17 points from the 8 holes I scored on ain't too bad, so much so it counted for my handicap, now down to a 16.7, yet another new low...

Counting score dropping off next round though, which will likely to Wallasey on the NCG stuff, so need to match/beat an 18.8 score differential to not go up, not that going up with 4 more comps after that in quick succession would be a bad thing per se :D :p

Played an open today at Ranfurly Castle. Lovely clubhouse, super friendly welcome and chat from the staff/club members.

Course has some excellent views of Glasgow when you climb up and away from the clubhouse..... Just shame about the 30-40mph wind today.... Ball hardly staying on the greens at times, I suspect a pro tournament would be suspended but we soldiered on...

Some tough holes/hardly flat fairways anywhere..

Shot a very very solid gross 86!! To be honest to even keep a card going for 18 holes was an achievement. Think it was net 77.

Par 4 8th - Driver, 3 iron, full wedge..... 425 yards   - nailed driver 200 yards

My score was 17th overall from 100+ players!! (50+ NR's)

I also shot 86 yesterday! Not quite the same though, easy course and not as windy, but same same right? :p

Played decently, just a casual round but hitting some really nice shots throughout, one blowup hole but hey. Through the round though I think I 'found a feel'... I had similar a bit ago and 'lost it', where I felt 'width' especially with the driver, now it actually feels like 'throwing the club', similar but slightly more follow through focused. I've heard the whole throwing the club bit before but it seemed to kinda click yesterday a bit and seemed to work out nicely, weird how sometimes there's a thought/feel that just seems to resonate, at least for a bit.

But yeah, was playing in Bristol on the 'easy' courses, with my new low handicap (16.7, noice) I only get 13 shots off the yellows so I convinced them to play of the whites to get 2 more shots, 13 just seems wrong :p It felt mostly the par 3's that were tricky though compared to yellow, longest was 204 into the wind, hate long par 3's. The course is generally so short that other than the par 3's it just felt like a normal course tbh. So 86, +16, 35 points, solidly average, or just below :p
