Golf Thread

Not a lot to write home about this weekend.....but I will anyway :p

Saturday, monthly medal and start of the winter eclectic. Was struggling with irons again and just scraped under 90 thanks primarily to my shot game, 60 yards and in is my strength at the moment (unless I'm bunkered!). Only four greens in regulation, twenty-nine putts. Highlight of the round was making par at the 600y 5th. Driver/5w/7w left me just short of the putting surface from where I made a simple up and down :)

Sunday, mixed autumn trophy (stableford). On the whole played much better, swing thought with irons was 3/4 backswing which worked well from a strike point of view although I did have a couple of 6i I left way out to the right. Ended up with 33 points after a handful of miss-steps. First was on the 7th where after a comical drive where I nearly missed the ball I'd hit a great 7w to get myself back in position, only to blade a 9i through the green from where I cam away with a six when it should have been an easy five. Then on the 8th, long par five I'd hit a good drive/5w to get myself past the corner of the dog leg. Then hit an errant 6i to find the greenside bunker from where I took two to get out :o Turned a good look at par into a double. My only blob of the round came at the 11th. My other errant tee shot of the day left me on top of one of the mounds down the right of the fairway, way back of the green. Luckily had a good lie and stance so thought I'd poke a 7w up the fairway and give myself a chance of getting up and down from 40-50 yards. Absolutely smoked it, carried it way further than I thought possible and straight into the end of the trees that line the left edge of the fairway finishing just before the green. Dropped a provisional only to shank it straight left across the fairway into the trees. Couldn't find either ball :( After that was solid until I had my only three putt of the weekend on the 17th out of nowhere. Just not quite as good on and around the greens, reflected in my 32 putts total (realistically 34 if you account for not finishing out the 11th).

Current handicap 11.7. Saturdays scoring differential 16.4, Sundays 13.6. My PB (6.8 diff) set back in July drops off in three rounds time so expecting to be back in the 12's by the end of the month.

Because we are gluttons for punishment haha

Hope you are doing okay bud, will have to catch up some time

Played this afternoon with friends who might join our club and somehow shot -2 on the back 9 for a total of 73(+1)

Didn't even realise until I checked my Garmin app when we got home. I knew I had shot +1 but hadn't realised a lot of that was on the back half overall as I was just entering the scores on my watch as we went
You know me mate, trying my best haha. I hope you're both all well :)

Long post...

Just back from a great trip I need a bit of time off as five rounds in five days is tough going. We got lucky with the weather as there was a lot of rain around the rest of Spain and Portugal but we dodged it for the most part.

1st was a scramble at Chaparral - Early morning flight, some lunch, late afternoon tee off - Good fun with the boys, the old team took down the youngsters, however the greens were at absolute disgrace - Couple of groups behind us walked off after nine holes and requested a refund - Nice course, nice clubhouse, but certainly wouldn’t return as the greens were shocking.

Next day up at one of my favorites La Cala Europa course - First off the tee box at 8:00 AM - It’s quite an experience as you stand on that tee box, and it’s still dark, and then within about 60 seconds the sun comes up over the hill, and you tee off love - la cala, played pretty well over there, me and my partner won the doubles again - Great condition, super clubhouse, One of my favorites.

Next day new course Los Naranjos near Marbella – Absolutely love this - blew me away from the moment we got there - Super friendly place, great buggies, great course condition, was excellent. Lots of different holes, but overall an absolute firm favourite from everyone. Another victory for myself and my partner in the doubles which meant we played the other unbeaten pair the following day for the title.

Marbella golf and Country Club - was a bit hungover on the first tee but somehow birided the first, and was out in 36 with two doubles on the card - did help when I chipped in for eagle at the 4th - Maybe sobered up on the back 9, but still overall played well - nice course two completely different nines, front 9 is very hilly up and down, 2nd 9 fairly flat, nice clubhouse enjoyable. Myself and my partner completed the 3rd win from 3 to take the doubles title for the second year in a row - 6 wins from 6 in the last two years.

Final day at Torrequebrada - an absolute firm favorite for the group. The overall Tour title was pretty much done and dusted after three days as one of the boys had a 14 point Stableford lead – He played superb golf for four days to be fair to him and deserved a victory. Maybe it was just the 5th day of golf, and a lot of drinking and eating, but I completely lost my swing shot 23 points, did not enjoy myself despite the course being absolutely magnificent condition, and without a doubt the best buggies have ever been on. Love the course just never play well here.....

Plenty to work on over the winter, going to get a few more lessons really need to sort when my swing goes, it goes, and I struggle to get it back.

Great trip and already planning next years.....

I hated golf yesterday as I managed a paltry 26 points playing off 5, so somewhere in the region of an 87 with the regular Saturday group

Went out this afternoon just to play 9 holes and made a double on the 8th hole to ruin the scorecard, but the other 6 birdies and 2 pars meant the best 9 holes of my life at -4 gross

6 birdies in 9 holes!!!! Jesus

Went out on Sunday and for the first time in a wile both me and my lad played 'alright' I mean he was good, 6 under his handicap of 24 I was over mine by a few but considering how I have been playing I'm happy with that. Set of with an 8 of the first hole (par 4) then went on a run of single bogeys and pars.
Still struggling of the tee a bit with the first shot of the day going massively right out of bounds, hit some across the floor. Sacked off the driver for my 5 wood and played well but on the last hole went with a drive and hit it really straight. One day I'll get my body to actually do what I want. Putting was good :) Struggle to clear my hip which causes hip to go forward causing heel strikes.

Rapsodo have launched their new MLM2ProX unit. looks like a total re haul.. tempted to look at this one tbh guys!
I thought about getting the MLM2Pro, was put off by the fact you needed stickers on the balls to measure the club data. Does the new version change that? Doesn’t matter if you’re using it indoors I suppose.

I ended up going with the mevo gen2 instead, bit more expensive but has all the data I could possibly need and then some.

Yes still need the RTP balls.

Yeah the flight scope software has just had a major re vamp of it. Big changes for the better!

Had an hour fitting mixed with a bit of a lesson today purely on driver and really enjoyed it. I currently have a QI35 Max Lite with the light shaft, swing speed around 94mph going off todays session and struggle for consistency. Most of the consistency will be down to me but good to see what else makes a difference.
Changes to swing today...
1. Stop lining up the logo on top of the driver with the centre of the ball instead have it a cm or so closer to me so at address looks like I'll hit the toe but in reality with the club off the floor its more in the middle. this stopped the heel strikes
2. Throw the club away from my during swing (sometimes feel like letting go on a bad day :)) to release the club properly, this helped me de-lofting it the club and hitting up more on it.
3. turn the hands a little more as I had the club face open a little much.

Tried:
Cobra Max K wanted to like this as they had it on offer but spun loads
Ping - Just really can stand the looks and I didn't like it when I hit it.
Titliest GTS2 - Struck this well
Callaway Quantum Max - Almost didn't want to hit this well as we wind a friend up about getting all Callaway stuff (chap doing fitting is an ambassador) but it really is a good driver a little better than the Titliest and a bit cheaper to

Tried a few different shaft options in each and different configs on the driver. 10.5 Callway head up 2 degree in draw weighting using the Denali frost silver 50g 5.5 seems to be what I need.
Really impressed with it as I got 30 yards more total distance than my current driver.

They didn't have a Cobra X in so maybe that would have been a better option but likely look out for the Callaway going cheap or ex demo(not sure I could stomach £530)

Qi35 will go to my eldest

Didn't miss hit many shots yesterday but yeh today was another story. 26 stable ford points.
Misses - Off the toe on the first shot sending it out of bounds right, tried 5 wood on second hole and got the same
Irons - A badge thin on some shots but generally hit them well apart one of the par these which I hit of the shaft it was that close the heel, somehow got a 4
Drive - Hit along the floor a few times, hit it high right . Last hole hit one not far of the green on a par 4 with a cracking drive.
Wedges good all round
Putting 0 ok

The misses being s catastrophic in the sense it must be nearly missing the ball suggests my body is doing all sorts of crazy ****.
I was playing golf with 2 lads of 15 (I'm not at 18) and I think they hit maybe a few bad shots all round whereas I was 50/50. Almost like I need a stock swing that just works.

12 holes today - too slow for me - 2hrs 40 minutes... as a 2 ball. Can't be arsed at this time of year.

Greens were decent, but pins were mental - greenkeeper must have had a bad night or something yesterday - tuck away in corners I've never seen in my life....

Ball striking was poor again....

Played in the Courtesy Cup today, men vs ladies 4BBB stableford. Our pairing was a great match up, all very close on the handicaps (9/10/10/11) and that's how the match played out. Nip and tuck all the way.

Scores were 18 all at the turn. A couple of poor putts by myself on 15 and 17, after my partner had driven the 16th green and made an eagle (2-4), left us one point behind going up the last. No one getting any shots. Partner and I were both just off the green right, hole high in two. Opponents hadn't taken on the corner of the dog leg so were further away. Neither of us hit great first putts and our opponents were in for bogey (5-2). One of us needed to sink our putt to make 4-3 and tie the match. Yours truly stepped up and delivered! Match tied 39pts all.

Overall score was 7-2 to the men after we didn't lose any of the matches. Five wins and four ties :D

Shout out to our opponents Anna and Aileen. I've played with a few of the ladies section now and these two were comfortably the longest off the tee. Anna in particular had a couple of drives which must have been nudging 200y +. And not forgetting my partner Mr Skinner who apart from driving it 280y down wind to hole high on 16 and making eagle; also made 4-4 on the 600y par five 5th.

Damn up to 8.6 handicap now and "soft capped" - risen more than 3 full shots this year.....
Is there a limit per season? we only have a week left on normal tees so after that no hcp rounds at the home course. Gone up from 17 to 18.3 but have a feeling some of the good rounds drop of soon.
I went out this morning, tee'd of in just enough light me and my lad played the first 9 as individuals then played the second name as a scramble to ensure we got round before a shotgun start comp got ready to go.
our course is a 10 hole course where you play some of them twice and this morning the 4 ball behind us we nearly lapped. At a guess they were around 3 hour 20 for 10 holes, not sure how that happens with no traffic.

Will order the Callawayy driver this week noticed 'as new' condition ones on GC4C for £329 and a a £20 voucher so winner.

Golf weather seems pretty rare at the moment. My new driver turned up so went to the driving range which was interesting...
So I took the Nike VRS Covert driver, My TM QI35 Max Lite and the Calloway, Nike driver is clearly much less efficient and doesn't go as far, the QI35 which ive struggled with for some time I hit a handful of shots which must have been within a few yards from each over. Calloway I got higher ball speed averaging 6mph more but they were spread out somewhat. Do think it was getting tired of hitting shots hard.
I do find that I consistently hit irons better in comparison to drives so maybe a driving iron wouldn't be a bad shout for looking out for a safe club. I do occasionally hit one thin but left to right dispersion is never much.

^ as with others not the greatest weather for golf right now, gym won out this morning. Due to play tomorrow, forecast is for sunshine but very blustery winds. I'm sure that will provide some entertainment!

Had a lesson on Wednesday.... Great session - Having your pro give you the once over is sooo worth it.

Basically I'm taking the club to steep on the take away then on the way down in order to create the space, I'm almost standing up on my toes.... Horrible when I saw it on video/pictures.

So takeaway from the lesson was almost to feel like my bum is against a wall and keep it there, and secondly feel like my take away goes round my body more rather than up. Forces me to rotate body more rather than just using my arms which is what I've been doing more recently.

So yesterday went to indoor trackman place (weather was rough outside!) - had a great session in there - swinging like 70/80% just getting the feel from the lesson - hit the ball superb...... .Really pleased. Even just trying to "chip" driver at around 60/70% swings - ball was straighter, path was down to around 2/3 degrees over top rather than the horrendous 9/10/11 that was showing up before lesson.

Pleasing start to winter work.. Got 3 more lessons to spread over the winter.....
