Damn you op I'm looking at v5s with a view to getting one now
///shakes fist///

There's 2 local to me, was tempted over weekend to try one, see if they are as bad as some people are saying!

Was looking at other cars alongside it and they don't seem underpowered compared to other similar cars of the time tbh.
But then I also noticed a wrx auto which had me thinking!!!

This thread wouldn't have decended into tripe if the OP added some context.

I know more than Housey anyway : Golf V5 - has 5 cylinders in a V and is a Golf

technically its a staggered bank straight 5 if you want to be really pedantic

///geeky vw person mode off///

So you are now tempted to try one yet still want up to believe you are not considering buying one?

Hang on, I said I am tempted to try one given peoples hatred of them and after looking at similar cars which on paper look no better.
How does that equate to wanting to buy one?
Why would I need to hide wanting to buy one?

One thing I've gleemed from this thread is that he doesn't particularly want us to believe anything :confused:.

What he wants is relevant replies, once again sadly lacking from yourself.

Because the only thing to believe is that i am after info only, for no reason other than gaining knowledge on them.
Ocuk detectives on overdrive it seems.

Relevent replies like what? He's got loads in this thread.

He has replies telling him what the economy is like.
He has replies telling him what the performance is like.
He has replies telling him how rare the 4Motion version is
He has replies telling him why they are rare compared to other engines in the range

etc etc.

He has more information than anyone with a 'whats that?' interest in a car they've no intention to ever buy would want. Yet he still wants more. Infact, he's lining up a test drive. Why? All this effort and interest of an obscure middle of the range version of a Golf from 2 generations ago that he doesn't have an interest in buying?

The fact pretty much everyone in this thread is a tad confused tells us that its hardly an odd thing for us to be thinking :p

Heck my opinion isn't even Anti Golf - its buy a V6.

My experience of the Golf V5 (170) is that it's a nice engine - punchy, torquey and makes a lovely noise. Very thirsty, though. I actually like the car as a whole package - Smart looking (even today and 12 years on since they were released, I think the higher spec mk4 Golfs look good), extremely well put together interior, feels a "cut above the rest" (TDIs, 1.4/1.6/1.8) with the V5 or V6 engines, but you do pay a fair old premium for this.

I would however probably be more tempted by the Toledo. Same of the above but cheaper, and higher sped.

I haven't read much of the thread, but that's my experience and thoughts on the matter :p

Fox you are talking rubbish. I have not asked for any more info. if I was looking at buying, a v6 would not even be an option.

Lining up a test drive? Nope. If I was going to test one I would have done already. You are wrong fox, you just don't want to admit it.

So whats the problem if you've got everything you wanted from the thread :confused:

Out of interest, why? Would you have a V5 over the V6 or 1.8T?

What's the problem with what? If you wanted the thread to die stop posting in it.
It's posters like yourself that has the problem here :)

Why not one of the others? I don't buy manuals, the v5 is the highest auto iirc.

dunno if i posted this in the thread yet but a few weeks back i let a family friend take my 20vt out. it was three up, three blokes. his first words after putting his foot down was "my v5 definately doesnt do that". three blokes on board and the 20vt still goes down the road far quicker than the v5. the 20vt still drinks less than his standard v5.

not saying its a perfect car at all, just the v5 is a proper odd ball
