Gone and done it ( and then re-did it )

Well I've finally bitten the bullet. Having stuck with Q6600 and then my Q9550 I decided it was time to jump and have ordered the following

Intel Core i7-2700K 3.50GHz (Sandybridge) Socket LGA1155 Processor - OEM **BLACK FRIDAY SPECIAL DEAL**

Asus P9X79 PRO Intel X79 (Socket 2011) DDR3 Motherboard

G.Skill RipJawsZ 32GB (8x4GB) DDR3 PC3-14900C9 1866MHz Dual/Quad Channel Kit (F3-14900CL9Q2-32GBZL)

I do quite a bit of video work in Premier Pro and photo work in photoshop hence the 32GB of RAM

Not to bothered about mega overclocking. if I get 4.5+ I'll be happy.

Stroll on Monday.

CPU: Intel® Socket 2011 for 2nd Generation Intel® Core™ i7 Processor Extreme Edition, Supports Intel® Turbo Boost Technology 2.0

I misread the CPU descriptor.

I thought that this would include the 2700K. I guess from your comment it will not.

Guess it's an email to OCUK cutomer support apologising for being a spanner.

Suggestions for a mobo / ram combination would be most appreciated. Guessing I'm looking for 16gb rather than 32gb now

It does not. The 2011 socket is ONLY the new hex core Sandy Bridge-E chips.

Sorry, it won't :(

For the i7-2700K you'll need a S1155 motherboard and you'd have to limit yourself to 16GB of RAM (maximum of 4 RAM slots) unless you buy expensive 8GB DIMMs.

Or for the motherboard and RAM you've picked you'll need a S2011 processor, the cheapest being £500 and not in stock.

just get an i5. why do ppl buy i7's i have no idea. i5's clock higher.

the OP stated that he does a lot of video and graphics processing, so he will benefit from having an i7 with it's 8 threads.

An i5 might be optimal for most gamers, but that doesn't mean it is perfect for everyone. His choice of a 2700K is the current best 8 thread processor for overclocking, but as overclocking is not a priority I would replace it with a 2600K. That's a £20 saving if the OEM version is bought, and a £60 saving if the retail version (with longer warranty) is bought, and for a basic overclock the performance is very similar (although the 2700K will do it at lower voltages).

I assume they buy them if they will make use of the hyperthreading, as perhaps the OP will given what they use their PC for ;)

No use for hyperthreading then i5-2500K.

Have a use for hyperthreading then i7-2600K/2700K.

Because they are significantly faster for programs which can use hyper threading, mainly video encoding and rendering.

@OP you'll want to change to either:

1155 board with 4x4GB RAM and keep the CPU

or

keep the RAM and mobo and get an i7 3930k (not cheap)

I7s also have performance gains in a few games - Civ V and Skyrim are two which see gains with an I7, and even 6 cores.

OK then - situation resolved.

As I'm planning running this kit for a while I decided to drop the 2700K and went for a 3930K. Quick Google search showed a few large etailers with them in stock so I've got one coming on Tuesday.

It's an extra £220 over the 2700K if you shop around and I know if I'd stuck with the 2700K and cut the RAM to 16GB I'd be wishing before too long I'd gone for the big daddy set-up.

So all's good, and thanks to the members for pointing out the error of my ways. It would have been a rather interesting experience trying to fit the 2700K into the wrong board.

Cant wait for my 32GB 6 core . Watch out Photoshop, Lightroom and Premier pro.
