Good Bye Freedom, Hello Police State Britain.

all encryption can be cracked...havent you seen Mercury Rising?

Point is not to let them intercept the data/information only way to do that is via pigeon-air...m8 of mine swears by his message in bottles scheme but dry land tends to scupper that plan...and the rivers and canals of the UK being so unpredictable nowadays what with the flash floods and whatnot.

All you have to be wary of then is the government Peregrine Falcon ;)

Other than download piracy - I got noth ing to hide so I couldnt care, personally I'd preffer a single ID card than a wallet full of cards. heck put my bank details on there while Im at it.

One card to rule them all :S

And when someone steals your identity and does something REALLY naughty.

Your've got nothing to hide .... right

We have a nice, comfy, interrogation chair waiting for you... don't worry about the copper wrist restraints.

(Is it safe... Is it safe ?)

That something really naughty might just be naughty enough to get the men with da BIG gunz chasing you.....

This has the makings of a familiar novel

when i watch the bill and there are crims right they check their phones but they are always pay as you go phones so they cant trace the bad people so this new database is a good idea cos it will fix this.

You owe me a new cuppa.

Why?

Give me your reasons why such a database would be a bad idea.

Other than "I dont want my details kept there"

I will give you one glaringly obvious one - Its going to cost the government an estimate of 12 BILLION pounds which in real terms will be a lot higher than that once they have paid for all of the pointless focus groups and consultants they always use.

Also given how incompetant this government has shown itself to be with our personal data I would rather they didn't have anymore than they already have.

Finally given the government is now at the highest level of debt ever recorded it would be prudent to rain in the purse strings from projects such as this and use the money more wisely (like on the public sector for example).

it isn't about the fight against crime its about total control. the fight is against us, the general public. they use crime/terrorism to capture our minds as its easier for them to take whatever freedoms they want to under the header of crime fighting or anti terrorism measures, well because what right minded person will argue with those reasons?

its classic psychological conditioning

no doubt people reading this will bury thier heads in the sand and cry ' TIN FOIL ' or whatever it is they do in order for them not to take reality head on.

It's only TIN FOIL if you completely erase history; in the last century alone, the US government knowingly did exactly what you mentioned. It was not 'tin foil,' it's hard documented fact.

People who seem to think a government is incapable of taking action to secure power need to read more books and get an education.

er you missed my point COMPLETELY . haha doesn't matter

re read my post.

Two words, plausible deniability.

And I was referring to communications, communications between two devices use a public key system which the ripa act is not applicable to as the user does not know the encryption key and it is only used for one session.

Plausible deniability only takes you so far but ok to the public key system, I'll leave you to test that in a court of law should it come to that though if you don't mind as what appears to be logical isn't always the path that is followed in these issues.

ahhh ok apologies , sometimes i read posts with the wrong voice in my head. :)

Are you admitting to multiple voices in your head? That's a good way to disprove the people who call you a loon... :p

The day they try and force me to buy my own identity card and give them my details is the day I leave this country, money or not, I'm getting on the nearest boat and sodding off.

Luckily this is a massive project, with the governments history regarding large IT projects, other than being a massive waste of cash I doubt it will work.

These idiots have no idea of the cost that will go into setting up this sysem and maintaining it. It is a much bigger job than I think they relise and on top of that replacing all the hardware every few years as the net expands. I can see this being epic fail. they have blatently brought it in because they have been unable to bring in the ID card scheme. Seeing as I work for an ISP it should be interesting to say the least.

How many terrorist attacks have there actually been in the UK, 3, maybe 4. 12 billion cost / 50 million population is about 240. do we honestly feel the need to spend £240 on this. Assuming it goes to budget and never has to be upgraded/maintained!

It is freaking outrageous. I could imagine doing this at the height of war or something but a few crazy people with bombs strapped to them, it is the most lo tech stuff you can imagine and they are only doing it once every few years at the most. How easy do they need it. Stop extorting money from motorists and do some real work instead and maybe you would catch em.

(LOL, who edited my sig. :( )
