Good Cheap Server - HP Proliant Microserver 4 BAY - OWNERS THREAD

I picked up one of these today, but I'm having trouble getting it to boot from a USB drive.

I've created bootable drives for various version of Ubuntu using the Universal USB Installer as recommended on the Ubuntu site. During the post screen on the HP I can see that it's picked up the USB device, but it just sits there with a flashing cursor whilst trying to boot.

I've tried a version of CentOS too and that did the same. I tried the same USB drive on my main PC and it boots straight off. I've looked round the BIOS but can't see anything obvious, the USB device is the primary boot choice.

Confused! Any ideas?

I don't see much point in using FreeNAS or Openfiler on a MicroServer to be honest. I can see the appeal for low-profile, dedicated NAS devices, but the MicroServer is a fully-fledged server and might as well be used as one!

Ubuntu Server should tick all the right boxes for you :)

I agree...

It took me a while to create the software raid but got it working...
Installed samba and messing with the config...for now I left it working without authentication just to see the transfer...about 50mb/s is that normal?

I think I've seen someone saying they are getting 100mb/s after a samba update...
I'm going to run all updates too..

I have a gigabit NIC on my Pc, gigabyt switch inbetween the microserver and the pc..

The only thing to mention is that Ubuntu Server is a VM sitting on ESXi 5.0, and Ubuntu is looking at 3 RAW disks, accomplished using this tutorial: http://blog.davidwarburton.net/2010/10/25/rdm-mapping-of-local-sata-storage-for-esxi/

I gave it 5gb RAM, it's only using about 400-500, the CPU it's up to 40-50% maximum when I'm transfering with 50mb , the transfer seems steady no fluctuations...

Samba is set to work with guest accounts for now.

Any idea? 50mb/s are normal?

Ahh..and I installed Gnome on my Ubuntu Server...I guess most would advise to use Webmin, but...any harm in using Gnome is the resurces are plenty?

Has anyone else received thier rebate cheque yet? I have just received this:

We're not allowed to link or name suppliers unfortunately.

The one I have that's working perfectly is '1.5m SATA External Cable Blue'

Cheers, arrived today and worked perfectly straight away!

The one I bought was 1.5m, blue, and in a braided sheath+plastic outer sheath.

Brand is "NEWlink", and model number "RB-471".
Cost me £3.93 delivered.

Now I just need to wait for a good deal on 2TB drives...

I received mine today and have installed Ubuntu Server, can anyone recommend a lightweight GUI I can use with it?

All I want to do with it is share the drives on the network and run serviio.

Webmin I would say - web based GUI

The next in line would be XFCE

I'm not a Linux guru but I installed Webmin on the Ubuntu server we have at work and it's very light.
XFCE seems to be one of the lightest decent GUIs, tried that on the desktop version of Ubuntu.

I installed Xbuntu as I found regular Ubuntu too sluggish but that was just my opionion

Kimbie

Regular Ubuntu - you mean with Gnome ? Gnome is the most common GUI used for ubuntu, so I think that's what you mean
Xubuntu = XFCE on Ubuntu :p
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Xubuntu

Gnome is very stable but a bit more demanding than Xfce

If you installed Xubuntu I think you installed the desktop version, as Ubuntu Server doesn't come with a GUI (as far as I know). You install the GUI of your choice after you install ubuntu Server.

I had the same issue. I then upgraded the firmware and then the problem went away.

Just to make absolutely sure before I blow a pile of money on 3TB drives...

Can anyone confirm that the 041_AHCI modded firmware (enabling full speed on the 5th SATA port) also supports 3TB drives on all 5 ports?

I wasn't considering 3TB drives until I found a company selling them for £73 each (inc. VAT!).
It may well be a misprice, as I've yet to see a 3TB drive significantly below £100.
