Good Cheap Server - HP Proliant Microserver 4 BAY - OWNERS THREAD

thats why you need a molex to sata cable, I believe it's been said many a time here - and even notes it in the servers manual for installing an optical drive. :)

There are 32pages to this thread - it is a bit unwieldy.

I also have discovered I need to try and find a VGA cable somewhere.

Research much before purchasing? :p

Yes, this thread and the 3 on AVForums and also elsewhere.

Shame there isn't a WIKI somewhere with everyone in one place rather than having to trawl through everything.

Anyway - WHS installing now. The Microserver is on my desk doing it's thing.

I have just got a single 2TB Drive in there at the moment alongside the supplied HDD. I have also got an optical drive in the bay.

Couple of questions - I have a 2TB drive full of media. If I stick that into a bay will it get wiped?

Also, I couldn't see any of locking the optical drive into place. As a result it is recessed about a quarter of an inch. Am I missing something?

Right ive been messing with whs2011 tonight quite a bit and i quite like it, got the remote server working fine and can log into it outside easily enough. Currently got it running on a dell inspiron 530 with a 1.8 c2d and a 2tb drive, had to put in a gigabit card as it was only 10/100 and was talking for ever to copy my synology stuff over. Are these upto the task of running whs2011 well enough with a little bit more ram? Or would I be better off getting a hudson board for example?

Im going to have it running pretty much 24/7 so want it as low power as possible but still capable enough of running whs2011

The other option is I have a spare h67 matx board sitting around and I could get a G620T 35w cpu, the only think i need to think about then is a smallish case that can take several hdd's

stupid question from a new user coming up; how do i email in trust?

Not sure if you can see it being a new user but there should be a "trust" button in the bottom right of his post (next to the "quote" button). Click that. If you can see it can you send me an e-mail as well? TIA

Edit: thanks for the mail :)

If anyone is interested in the bracket for two HDDs in the optical bay I will be selling the two unopened ones I bought shortly in the Members Market, along with my unused Microserver. Please do NOT respond here about it. The MM has strict rules and everything will be above board and there. Only posting here in case someone has been struggling to get the bracket (mine were imported from USA)

hi all, does anyone know if the N36L server will take memory like "Corsair CMX4GX3M1A1333C9 XMS3 Desktop Memory 4GB" and see it as 5GB with the initial 1GB already slotted in please? I am happy to lose the ECC-ness.

For anyone that cares, flash 11 is available and with a GT520 OC the server is at 30% cpu usage for 1080p YouTube video. Impressive :)

I bought the cheap 5450 on offer a couple of weeks back, and with a fresh install of W7 64bit, latest graphics drivers, and Firefox with Flash 11, I have the choppiest YouTube experience ever.

It seems to play 1080p .mkvs without fuss, but even the nastiest 240p SD settings on YouTube are jerky throughout.

Turning off the 'hardware acceleration' in the Flash options makes no discernable difference, other than shuffling a small % of the load between the CPU/GPU.

It's looking like the 5450 may have to go, unless there are some software settings I'm overlooking?
