Good Cheap Server - HP Proliant Microserver 4 BAY - OWNERS THREAD

Hi all,

has anyone ever uploaded their USB ESXi install for their microserver?

EDIT: forget it, forgot about that uNetbootin tool! :)

I am having problems with 1080p DTS MKV files as sometimes I cant fast forward or rewind a movie and it takes yonks! Running Plex to Mac mini.

Ive no problems using with 1080p DTS MKVs streaming from my HP MicroSserver, to a 2011 MacMini using XMBC within OSX Lion.

If I pause a movie then go back to it later, it takes ages to resume or sometimes wont play so have to start it again from the beginning which then leads me to the fast forwarding issue. Not sure what it is, 720p ones are fine.

Hi guys I cracked open my Microserver today, tried a 1080p video on XBMC live and it played perfectly, although both cores were running high, one at 96%, and one at 77%, although VDPAU hardware acceleration was enabled, any ideas why the GPU doesn't appear to be taking the strain please?

Can anyone recommend a memory upgrade for my machine?

I only added 1 x 4GB to the machine (coupled with the 1GB built in) when I bought the machine. I now want to make it 8GB and am actually wondering if it is cheaper to buy a 2x4GB kit or just a matching or similar 4GB chip.

The original one I got was:
CT51272BA1339
240-pin DIMM DDR3 PC3-10600 • CL=9 • Unbuffered • ECC • DDR3-1333 • 1.5V • 512Meg x 72 •

To get another chip to match this would cost £37. I notice lots of 8GB kits on OcUK for much less than that, except they are mostly Non-ECC (some aren't labelled though). The machine just has Server 2008 R2 on it and is used for storage and general windows-y tasks.

1) Should I just get the cheaper non-ECC pair for it and put the old 4GB I have away?
2) Is there any immediate drawbacks from using faster rated memory (as this seems to be cheaper) instead of PC 10600

Any suggestions on what to buy, from the OcUK selection, to bump up my machine to 8GB?

Edit:
quick question: Is this machine SATA 1/2/3?
quick question: If I wanted to give this machine audio and sound, is there a passively cooled solution I could use (in 1 slot)?

ECC is pretty much a waste of time on a home server like this, i would get a 8GB kit, there is no drawback to using faster rated memory.

It is sata2.

I guess you meant audio and visual, there are a number of graphics cards people use i can't remember which models of the top of my head right now though. People generally use a USB sound card for audio.

do you guys mind if i ask some really silly/stuped noob question? as i have started a thread about a server i made with a old laptop, so all this is new to me, but i have built a few computers way back in the days of socket A & 939? lol, so i do know some basics..

ill fire away...

1, how would i connect to it? to set it up? would i need a keyboard/mouse/monitor/dvd drive etc? or can i easy remote to it, from my main xp machine? to get it all going...

2, does it come with a OS? can i connect a dvd drive & install a OS? ie, xp win7, WHS? are there drivers to support these OS`s?

3, once OS is installed, can i then just plug in my hard drives with data on them? & alls well?...just like adding a extra hdd to a pc?.. as iv read they need to be blank & formated from inside the server..

once again, im sorry for the silly questions, but i have only just found out about streaming files through wifi/wireless, & im baffled with amazement...

1 You would need kb, mouse and monitor to set it up along with a dvd or a usb stick with your os of choice

2 No it doesnt, but you can get whs2011 for around £40 if thats what you wanted

3 possibly dependant on os but i dont see any reason why not, with whs2011 you can but they just show up as extra drives, in whs v1 i believe it just adds them to total storage so you have one big space.

If you buy it with the remote access card, you don't need a keyboard, mouse or DVD (you can mount ISO files).

To even set it up? thats pretty cool if so but i bet it costs a lot more than a basic mouse and keyboard.....?

Once setup however it doesnt need either so you could probably just get away with using what you have on you main pc then using remote access

Yeah you can do the lot.

It's useful to remote in as it has a dedicated ethernet port so even if the server has crashed, you can fix it.

If you want to just stick the server away somewhere and never have to plug anything into it, I'd say it's worth it. As you say though, a keyboard and mouse are cheaper if you don't mind the hassle.

thanks guys, looks like im going to buy one then..

on the hp site it looks like its 1.5ghz & 2gig ram model now..

iv added the server, its the N40L model, 1.5ghz 2gig ram model, & the remote access kit, they aint got the dvd or the burner in stock, or ild order one of them also..

total is £ 328.80 unsure about delivery charges, i might have a look around & see if theres anything else, as that seems to be pricey.. unless i can find it cheaper else where?

is there any alternatives?

How much was the remote access card Mike? Mind came last week and was 230 delivered on its own......hard to say where I ordered it from as its against the rules but I found the deal on the hotukdeals site
