Good Cheap Server - HP Proliant Microserver 4 BAY - OWNERS THREAD

First off don't buy from HP direct as you can get it cheaper elsewhere, then i'd buy Windows Home Server 2011. Don't bother with the remote access card as as you only need a monitor and keyboard/mouse for the initial setup i.e bios and installing windows from then you can use the remote desktop or WHS's own frontend. You don't even need a optical drive as you can install WHS 2011 from a USB stick. You can get the OS and Microserver for about £180 all in after rebate.

Can anyone recommend a memory upgrade for my machine?

I only added 1 x 4GB to the machine (coupled with the 1GB built in) when I bought the machine. I now want to make it 8GB and am actually wondering if it is cheaper to buy a 2x4GB kit or just a matching or similar 4GB chip.

The original one I got was:
CT51272BA1339
240-pin DIMM DDR3 PC3-10600 • CL=9 • Unbuffered • ECC • DDR3-1333 • 1.5V • 512Meg x 72 •

To get another chip to match this would cost £37. I notice lots of 8GB kits on OcUK for much less than that, except they are mostly Non-ECC (some aren't labelled though). The machine just has Server 2008 R2 on it and is used for storage and general windows-y tasks.

1) Should I just get the cheaper non-ECC pair for it and put the old 4GB I have away?
2) Is there any immediate drawbacks from using faster rated memory (as this seems to be cheaper) instead of PC 10600

Any suggestions on what to buy, from the OcUK selection, to bump up my machine to 8GB?

Edit:
quick question: Is this machine SATA 1/2/3?
quick question: If I wanted to give this machine audio and sound, is there a passively cooled solution I could use (in 1 slot)?

rp2000

I have a stick of 4GB Kingston Value Ram which Installed 6-months ago when I got the microserver which cost around £28. I see today, the same stick can be purchased for less than £15 which is shocking so I am going to order one to bring mine up to 8GB.

Last week I installed an Asus ATI Radeon HD 6450 1GB Silent PCI-E card which came with the low profile bracket which is needed for installing it into your microserver.

This lets me connect my microserver directly to my Panasonic Plasma via hdmi so I get video and sound. Getting a usb sound card like some folk have suggested is ok if you want to use the onboard vga port for video output but I prefer the HDMI port which is so much better.

has anyone put a dvdrw inside?

i notice hp say to use a thinner one, but if you do, do you get a fascia? as it looks like a normal pc burner will fit perfect, & if you put the thinner one in, you would be left with a gap...

oh, my orders placed now, ill take delivery fri, so happy days, lol

a standard optical drive fits fine, you need a 4 pin to sata power adaptor and a sata cable with a right angle at one end though.

normal size fits fine once you remove the plastic face and metal plates

as above you will also need a molex to sata power converter, i used a normal sata cable though

Can't tell if that RAM works but the most popular RAM used with the microserver is the kingston value.

Google search: Kingston ValueRam 4GB PC10600 DDR3 RAM

latest update..

iv ordered:

5.25" metal tray for 2.5", 3.5" hdd/slim dvd/hd mounting.

hp slim dvdrw burner, to go in the above.

kingston 8gb "2x4gb" ddr3 1333mhz ram.

i know i have to do a firmware/bios update, to use 5 hdds & dvd burner.

wish me luck, lol

love it mate, just glad you didn't bother with the ILO card. What is the 5.25" metal tray you've gone for? Sounds good?

it makes where you would put a standard dvd-rom into two, so ill have the slim half size burner in the top, like a laptop burner, & inside you can put another hdd, ie a 2.5 one..

heres a picture of one?

slim dvdrom in the top, hdd under...

Got you. I want to put some 2.5 drives in mine, someone earlier in the thread showed a bay which you could plug 6 x 2.5 drives but I thought it was quite pricey at over 40gbp iirc

mines just turned up, lol, ill be leaving it till tomorrow, hopefully my other part will arrive then, plus the little thing feels soooo cold, ill let it warm up before i start messingwith it.
