Good Cheap Server - HP Proliant Microserver 4 BAY - OWNERS THREAD

To claim the cashback I've filled in the form, it mentions an invoice, will a print out from online be sufficient does anyone know?

Cheers!

Does the motherboard on this have only 4 sata ports? At this price I can't ignore it but will it be possible to have the following configuration:

250GB Boot disk
2*2TB HDD in raid 1
2*2TB HDD in raid 1

Or will the boot install (windows server 2008) have to be on one of the raid arrays?

You can install a drive in the optical bay, i think there is a spare sata port on the mobo but you will need a molex to sata power cable.

Ah, thanks. On the information overview on their website (not sure If I can put a link here since they sell them too), they say the maximum capacity is 8TB (4*2TB), is this just referring to physical space in the case?

SATA Protocol SATA 2, 3Gb/s
SATA Ports

5 internal
Port transfer rate

3Gb/s total
Maximum Capacity

up to 8.0TB (4 x 2TB non-hot plug SATA HDD)

You can have 6 drives in the microserver if you use the esata connector on the back like me.

Nice, I think I can just deal with 5 to be honest, eSata port will be useful for external hard drives. What software do you recommend using on this? WHS 2011 or FreeNAS? And how does software RAID match up to the onboard RAID?

Thanks

Edit: Just bought it :D

Ive got 2x N36L both now with 6x 2TB HDDs, I've got one running WHS11 and the other FreeNAS 8, i found Freenas to be easier to setup and get running as a great NAS box, i struggled massively to install Sickbeard, Sabnzbd etc, whereas with the WHS11 box I found it very tricky to get setup how i wanted it, but found the extra software very easy to get installed and running.

The WHS11 is probably the more flexible setup, but more frustrating imo.

You running them with any sort of RAID configuration? Is it possible to backup to a WHS11 from a mac using time capsule?

edit: It's a central storage solution for my house, my parents and brother and going to backup any files on there, along with family photos.
I have another backup solution from this server in addition.

Yey mine arrived today and after hunting for hdds I have WHS2011 installed and doing updates.

Any WHS guides out there I should have a look at? Basic must do's?

Also do we have a post that puts all the drivers in one place? I don't know if there's anything I need to install or if windows update will find everything.

You can get the latest GPU/MoBo drivers direct from AMD support.amd.com/us/gpudownload/embedded/Pages/embedded_windows_all.aspx

Hey,

Not that I'm too lazy to trudge through 125 pages of this thread, but could someone please link me to some posts with good pictures of the machine please?

Cheers,

Su
