Good Cheap Server - HP Proliant Microserver 4 BAY - OWNERS THREAD

Page 99 of the microserver thread over at the overclockers au forums has great pictures of the backplane.
I decided not to try and rewire it for the card I orginally had - but I reckon you could snip the mini SAS connection off the end and rewire to sata connections pretty neatly.

Is anyone using a graphics card rather than the onboard one? I am finding it very difficult to use the server on my NEC 24" without my eyes bleeding.

I just want a very cheap PCI-E card that will allow me to use the server at a good resolution on my monitor.

Thanks, is a 6450 worth £10 over a 5450 for this purpose, as there is one for £20 on offer ending today?

EDIT:
I've gone for the MSI 5450 1GB at £20

Got a few questions if someone wouldn't mind helping me :)

1) Apart from WHS what the other popular OS?
2) Best hard drives to put in these?
3) Will i be able to plug this into my router and share it wirelessly to the laptops but then run a homeplug off the router also to my desktop in another room?
I am not very clued up on networking etc so the above is probably an easy question! :p

Thanks guys

ok this is how I got my server / use it.

It is downstairs on the floor next to TV - quiet enough in there.

Running Windows 7 64 bit.
have upgraded the ram to 8gb
changed the gfx card to an ati silent 6450 low profile gfx card
connects to my TV via HDMI (sound comes through HDMI)
put in 2 x 2 tb WD green drives

(put the other one I bought in the main pc upstairs.... this syncs with one of them downstairs....)

I run Allway sync to sync between certain movie and music / software folders....

sync backups from all computers and store them on server and main pc vice versa.... (with a bit of extra backups to google drive ;)
I have it connected to router via ethernet cable - another cable runs upstairs (hidden so wife dont kick off!)
and connects to main pc in the man room

I watch movies / use the internet downstairs (controlled by a small Logitech Dinovo Mini (great these)

watch movies upstairs (stored on the server)

Jump in and control the server via Teamviewer (free) on my android (Galaxy SII)
Turn it on and off via this and WOL
store pictures on it.

Download NZB / torrent / or jump in remotely on the server and download ....

Stream to Phone to watch a movie in bed..... or use Airplay to stream to the Ipad (although thats died )
This is one of the best things Ive bought .... must admit would be lost without it now.

Hope this helps anybody deciding ..... I was going to get a Synology nas at the time but they were pricey for a 4 disk setup.....

1) All manner of linux distributions, Win 7. Also hypervisors (for virtualising OSes) like ESXi

2) Go for whatever is in your budget. 7200RPM beneficial.

3) Yes. I do this. Server is in the office next to the desktop PC and router/switch. Media PC is in the lounge connected via a set of homeplugs to the office router. YMMV on homeplugs as it is almost entirely dependent on the quality of your electrical wiring.

Around 30 days. you should have an email first from HP telling you that the promotion was accepted and a cheque is being sent out. I would chase them up if I was you.

Does anyone know if there is a way to make this server/WHS2011 turn on and off at certain times of the day? eg. Turn on at 7am and off at 7pm

Thanks mate. I have a copy of win 7 I can use but what will I lose out on WHS? What Linux distros are similar to whs also?

Ok thanks mate will do some research.

Again thanks mate. Just wanted to check its ok to be part wireless and wired.

Can anyone recommend me a good guide to get it setup from installing OS to accessing it from the devices in my house.

Thanks guys

I have an HP Microserver that I have been using with Windows Home Server for the last while.

I have recently moved to a Mac environment at home and OSX Lion does not play nice with WHS. As a result I am looking to move.

The HP Microserver is currently setup with 4 HDDs. 3X2TB, 1x1TB and the 160GB OS drive.

I understand that Freenas can be run from a USB memory stick - is that right?

What I want to do is migrate across. At the moment I am using Stablebit Drive Extender with my drives. This has popped everything into a single pool and duplicates everything. I am going to take everything out of the pool which will leave me with data spread across the drives in NTFS format.

How can I migrate that data across to Freenas and also use some form of redundant array?

In what way doesn't it play nice? I'm running WinHS and FreeNas8 on my Microservers and as far as my Lion systems are concerned there isn't an noticeable differences between them. Besides WinHS also runs many more apps/services (SABNZB, Sickbeard etc)

You can indeed (and i do) run freeness off a 2gb+ USB stick, as for migrating, sorry cannot help you.
