Good Cheap Server - HP Proliant Microserver 4 BAY - OWNERS THREAD

No Time Machine backups for a start. No connector on OSX either. I currently don't have a windows based PC running so I need to manage fully from a Mac.

I have also been having issues using remote desktop - it seems to work sometimes and not others.

I don't use newsgroups so not pushed about sickbeard etc.

Right guys I'm in a bit of a pickle here. Shut down the server the other day (n40l) and there was a pop. All power to the machine went off apart from the hp logo on the front which changed to purple. Rang them up and they have sent me a new motherboard and a PSU. Problem is my motherboard has the modded bios on it. Will this void my warranty and will I be charged for the replacement? Cheers

Maybe...depends if they can get it to boot!

Hi chaps.

Just bought one of the N40L's to see what they are like. Now can I ask three simple questions that have probably been asked many times in the course of the this thread? :) I would have searched, but at 136 pages, it seems quicker just to ask.

Anyway, can I mix and match ECC RAM and Non ECC RAM?

If not, can I fit something like this:

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MY-147-CR&groupid=701&catid=8&subcat=1180

Lastly, will this fit?

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CD-000-SL&groupid=701&catid=10&subcat=114

Thanks :)

RAM looks fine to me. Don't know if you can mix and match, personally haven't tried it. Doubt it though, reckon it will be one or the other.

Drive looks fine, remember a molex to sata cable and also a sata cable :D

I have just got a friend to buy one of these for his business and was wondering if I could ask for some peoples opinions

My friend has ordered everything, Microserver N40L, 2x3TB HDD's, 2x4GB DDR3 and a Optical Drive to HDD drive bay converter.

I have already decided that I am going to put the 250GB HDD in the ODD and install WHS on it.

Option 1: He has 2 x 3TB Seagate Baracudda Drives and also has a Samsung F2 2TB drive. He would like 3TB of space, so originally I was going to set the 2 3TB's in Raid 1 and then use the 2TB for Windows Server Backup.

Would this be the best way of using the space? He wants to be able to expand the array at a later date to 6TB (adding another 3TB and using Raid 5?) and possible 9TB if needs are there.

Option 2: I was thinking, instead of setting up the 2 x 3TB in Raid 1, would I be better buying Drive Bender and using that to make a storage pool instead?

This will allow me to expand the storage a lot easier than migrating a Raid array right?

So the question is; Raid 1 or Drive Bender (or similar program) to manage the initial 2 x 3TB disks

Thanks

I have my N40L... just need to buy some components for it and some HDDs. But I'm going to have to do it bit by bit - HDDs are so expensive at the moment.

It's mainly going to be used as a file server, but I'll probably run XBMC on it so I can use it as an HTPC too as it's likely to be on all the time.

Im waiting for windows 8 before I build mine properly using its drive pools. until then im on win 7 with a simple RAID over 2x2tb drives

Will get the cables as well. Now I just have to be patient while I wait for it to be delivered :)

Is the going rate for this server before cashback around the £260-270 mark? Should have picked up another of these when they were on offer a while back :(

Also I purchased one of the remote access cards with the last server and seem to have had nothing but bother with it. There seems to be an issue with the login page when I pop in the username/password. On clicking submit or pressing enter I am returned back to the login page. I am using the correct login detials and tried updating the firmware however this made no change. It looks like the cards EWS is not processing the login properly then timing out. Has anyone else had issues with the remote access cards?

Just ordered mine today for £239.98 before cashback. Going to run server 2008 R2 with 4x 3TB WD Greens and boot from a 128GB m4 attached to the eSata port. Should be sweet :)

Is that ex VAT or inc VAT? Are you able to trust me where you are getting it from for that price? My current box is running Server2008 R2 and does a decent job of it. Not the quickest at booting (or logging in to windows) but thats to be expected seeing as I'm running a domain and all sorts of other services off the box :)

Yeah they sure are. Still even with the cashback it's a good deal for the £150ish that I've seen. About the same price as a NAS but you can do so much more with these. Planning on getting another to mess about with server 2012 and win 8 (and maybe see what the hype about WHS is all about:p ).

Thanks for the Trust GarethH but I'd already been there and its up to £262.80. Prices aint half like a yoyo :(

Picked one of these up a week ago for £250. Currently running it stock with vortexbox serving my squeezebox touch, works beautifully :D To think I was going to pick up a nas box till I saw this thread. Just need to pick up some 2tb hdds when I receive my rebate.
