Good Cheap Server - HP Proliant Microserver 4 BAY - OWNERS THREAD

Personally, depending on what you're planning to use them for, id avoid any kind of RAID setup and just mount each drive separately, that way you get the full capacity of each, but don't lose everything if one fails, just that one drives contents.

what about with redundancy, will it be 50/50?
If you went with RAID 1, which is basically a mirror, yeah you would have half the space.
RAID 5 provides redundancy and would give you just short of 6TB, you would need a dedicated RAID card as I don't think the server supports it and they can be quite pricey.

Remember though any redundancy provided by RAID is not the same as having a backup, its still very easy to lose data with redundant RAID arrays.
I personally use RAID 0 at home but my data rarely changes and its backed up to 3 separate locations.

whats the best way to use 4x2TB drives without losing much storage space? i.e. no or least backup

I'm running 4x2TB in ZFS RAIDZ (Similar to RAID4, you lose one dive to parity)

Will be adding a 5th 2TB drive and rebuilding shortly, had it sat on my shelf for months now. Once that's done I'll have 8TB usable on it and can clone over the data from my main file server (7TB in an 8x1TB hardware RAID5 with hotswap bays) Then I'll finally be in a position to do the hardware upgrades (Athlon X2 -> Nehalem i7 - Again, sat on my shelf for months) and Virtualisation I want on that. Definitely want to move to Server 2012 for the Storage spaces capability so that i can start phasing in larger drives easily (Dedup looks really sweet too) Not sure yet whether I'll use the ESXi hypervisor or just go Hyper-V.

hi, yes to do that and to also record tv too

You could look at mediaportal.

It allow's you to share a tv tuner and it recordes direct to the machine.

All you do is install the program on the server setup the server then install it on the other machine and point it to the server and it should see the TV tuner and allow you to record to the server.

How noisy do people find these? If I were to get one it would be in my bedroom and on 24/7 so, noise factor is important here. I have read that it is pretty quite but did come across some reviews on amazon that claimed it is loud enough to not be a great media server which worries me.

I must admit when I got mine I was expecting it to be whisper quiet due to some of the reviews. But I was disappointed to find its not, although i cant say it's much noisier than my fat ps3. You could always change the fan though if your feeling technical :D

The noise level is the only thing that has disappointed me with the Microserver as like already mentioned many people have claimed its really quiet where as mine is certainly not. Maybe I just got unlucky though. I'm going to look into changing the PSU as it seems to be the main culprit for noise on mine.

Apart from this though its a great piece of kit an I'm very impressed with it's performance for my needs.

Guys what is the part code on the invoice, i bought the server from a competitor and printed out the invoice, but there is no part code?, unless i'm reading it wrong?

Cheers.

Has anyone tried out these modifications, did you feel they made a discernible difference?

What upgrades would you consider a must for this unit and has anybody done anything "cool" with theirs that they would like to recommend / boast about?

I think the PSU fan is the noisiest. I disconnected the case fan and didn't really hear a difference. Currently my servers on top of a folded up towel as it seems to vibrate through the floor otherwise and give a very low hum.
