Good Cheap Server - HP Proliant Microserver 4 BAY - OWNERS THREAD

Well my Xonar and 6450 arrived today!
Hope the 6450 fits the Heatsink does seem a bit beefy lol :(
Got the XFX 6450 1Gb didn't realise it was passively cooled til it got here.

Well the GFX card fit! :D
Pretty close tho it's quite wide and appears to be butting up against some of the caps on the Xonar I installed, should be fine.

Are win7 64bit dirvers fine for 2k8?

YEah they did, had read elsewhere people were having troubles with the installer.
Did the same for the Asus Xonar DG and thats working fine too :D

Just need to loate the RAM, cant remember where I put it lol

Ok, mines arrived, im trying to swap the ram but for the life of me cannot remove the SAS plug, i can see its got a little silver button/ clip thing but just can't seem to release it from socket and I dont want to force it, am I doing something totally stupid..?

*ignore* got fed up and pulled it out, omg it was tight and I thought I must have bust something but it appears to be good, phew

A lot of folk (including myself) have move the 4 x molex power connectors from below the 5.25 bay, behind the led and re-routed them along the channel above the power supply. The same one that the SAS and fan cables go along. This alows you to put a 2.5 or SSD with no modifcation or even a full 3.5 drive with some dremmeling.

A lot of the MiniSas plugs are incredibly stiff where the catch isn't actually unlatching. Folk seem to have success activating the latch with a mini screwdriver.

Got to say im pretty impressed with it so far, slight issue with my drive bender activation but hopefully that will get sorted soon, got it plugged into a power monitor, with 4 hdd's in and one optical its currently using about 49w whilst copying files from one hdd to another

Anyone know if over clockers sell the adapters to convert the DVD drive space into another hard drive place? thinking about putting my OS drive there so i can have the 4 bays for storage.

Thanks.

Front vent on these things is a dust magnet. Needs a filter on it because the front of the hard drives were dust up too!

Right as some others have mentioned its not as quiet as I had hoped, im not sure if the rear fan is the cause as much as the hdd's themselves, ive put it on a foam pad from a motherboard and it has helped, im using the supplied 250gb drive for the o/s and have 2 samsung 2tb F4's in there and I'm sure its those I can hear whirring away making most of the noise, its not loud as such but its just one of those noises I can pick up on badly :( can anyone recommend any other drives that might be quieter?

Well, after asking in the general hardware section to spec me a build for basically streaming media to my devices around the house, someone suggested this.

A quick read, and I ordered one within 30-40 mins. Along with 8GB RAM and the slim GPU mentioned a page or 2 back. Can't wait to get it all set-up.

Now, I do have a question though. Am I better using Windows 7 or Server? I would like to be able to access the drives while I am out and about, but this is not the main use for the machine, as it is really for streaming on the home network.

I would like to be able to watch / listen to media on the machine also, as well as use office and the likes of EAC and DVD/BR ripping software. Will Server manage this or am I better putting on Windows 7?

Ive had mine for a while and tbh im waiting for server 8 and their drive pools to come out.

I've been using the Beta of Server 8 since I got mine a few months ago for this same reason.

Has been working great thus far with Mirroring setup in the Storage Pool's. I'll be formatting and dropping the full version on there when it's released

Any stability issues? Mine always crashes after writing a few hundred GB to the pool.

A quick look at the dump files seems to put the blame on Spaceport, the storage pools driver.

I'm using parity mode over 5 drives.
