Good Cheap Server - HP Proliant Microserver 4 BAY - OWNERS THREAD

go for 16gigs man its cheap enough these days/

I thought the most this could support is 8GBs?

The remote access kit allows you to access the BIOS of the server across the network. This can sometimes be handy. If you need to change BIOS settings you need to connect it up to a monitor and keyboard. With the remote access kit, you can avoid that - but it's pricey.

The graphic card: a 5450 or 6450 is the ideal card. Anything more powerful will be too demanding for the server's PSU.

Ahh I see - I won't need to worry about that then...

Thanks for the graphics suggestions... Think I'll go for the 6450 then - Want to have the most powerful graphics card I can in there if possible...

Officially it is 8gb but people have said 16gb does work. Just do some research into which modules have been confirmed working, there are some in this thread...somewhere :p

To be honest, I think 8GB is fine for my needs right now...

So I've just bought it :D Along with:

- Kingston 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 1333MHz i5 Memory Kit Non-ECC CL9 1.5V
- Sapphire HD 6450 1GB DDR3 DVI VGA HDMI PCI-E Graphics Card

Huzzah! :D Got my weekend project sorted :D

Got another question! :p Which OS to choose... I was going to go with WHS 2011, but I just saw this guide and it shows they've just used Windows 7 for the OS... I have both, so it's not a problem - However, I don't know which one to choose...

I'd like to do everything the guide shows (XBMC, SABnzbd, Sickbeard etc.) - but I'd also like to host a small website on it. Can Windows 7 host?

Dunno, I don't think it suppors IIS, but it might let you install Apache etc.

Excellent news :) Also how is Windows 7 on the RAID front?

As mentioned, I have 2x1TB drives at the moment, but I plan to upgrade them quite soon. I'd like the ability to be able to use them together at the moment, but to be able to upgrade them easily in the future and expand from 2 to 4 or 5 drives.

Is anyone else using 16gb of ram? I'm using the Corsair ram and it's showing 16gb in windows, but only 8gb when doing the POST. Is this right?

mine came today complete with useless full size HDD of 250GB
stupidly i forgot to get teh OS in time for the weekend.

If you think it's useless then send it my way :D

I remember the days when 1.7gb was all you could get :D

As for the OS why not order windows online and then download it ?

Glad I'm not going to be pulling my hair out alone today :p

Anyone used Drive Bender before? Think I'm going to use Windows 7 and Drive Bender so I can mix and match the hard drives and have the ability to swap them out for larger ones later on...

i need that cd bay for a 5th hdd!
i wouldnt have minded if it was a 2.5 250gb as i could just fit it in somewhere.

i dont know what i will do with it!

what is the best way to proceed?

the microserver cannot go where the router is located.
it is in wireable distance to both PCs it will be serving..whtat is the best way to connect these up? do i need a switch?
how can i get a connection between it and the house router to access files off site? i can buy another router if needed

I have mine connected to a nice little Cisco e3200 router - connected to a cable modem.

then I have bedroomTV connected to the router and lounge TV/ notebook/mobiles all wireless... zero problems.

Later I may change and have the miniserver as a true server and connect it in between the modem and router...
