Good Cheap Server - HP Proliant Microserver 4 BAY - OWNERS THREAD

Presumably any new features like that would require an updated chipset as well as a new CPU. This update is probably just a matter of soldering the faster processor into place.

With the additional processing power they'll be better suited for their target SME market.

RAID10 would have been nice though. For parity RAID I'd still want dedicated hardware.

Same thing they did on the last update...

Indeed.

I wonder what they'll do with the cooling this time? The last processor bump only added 3 Watts, this one will add an additional 10W.

As the TDP will have more than doubled compared to the original N36L model the noise levels could be going up.

So since im a nzbmatrix refugee, I have wanted one of these for a while. I could get one of these, install unbutu, and have my own nzb indexer using nzbnab. is anyone elese doing this?

This thread is 2 years old today and it seems to have been on the front page for all of that time. That's quite an achievement. Happy birthday thread!

Been playing with my new server all day today :D Fortunately, I had the day off to set it all up. :D Currently playing with XBMC - Got it running Aeon MQ4 very smoothly! Very impressed! :D

Yep, my N36L will be two years old in a few days. The actual server cost is still more-or-less the same. Installing 8GB of memory back then was an expensive job, although at the time it didn't seem that bad.

One of my N36L which is running FreeNAS had its 1year Up-Time-Birthday a couple of days ago... I really want all the features of the latest build, but im waiting for a power cut or crash before otherwise un-necessarily switching it off to install it.

The other is running WHS2011 and i reboot that once a month, just to do OS software updates and keep SabNZB, Sickbeard and a few other programs updated.

Amazing little boxes for the money and I so glad I bought mine when I did (18month ago), the price of the 2TB HDDs i bought to fill them with is still higher than the price I paid back then.

And so will the complaints...

My n40l is hardly audible at all, i just know it's on when the lights flicker, blue light or a slight rumble/clunking of the HDD's

The addition of an extra internal USB could also be a huge benefit...

;)

What do hp actually accept as an invoice? I paid using Google wallet a a well known e outlet

Will the Google wallet receipt be ok with despatch confirmation?

Does it include details of what was purchased and where from?

From T&Cs item 1:-

The seller/reseller’s invoice must clearly show the HP part codes and cost of the qualifying products purchased.

Most online suppliers will have a system in place to allow copy invoices to be downloaded, or will supply them on request.

I will have to request one Iguess , i don't have a part code

is that available with whs 2011?

its useless because it is taking up a whole slot out of a precious 4!

im going to need some help setting this up!

you mean 5 slots, Whilst I didnt use the drive provided, they are good for just sticking the OS on and having your files on the other 4 drives.

^^^^ I managed to get 5x2TB in and then stick a SSD on top of the one in the DVD caddy for the OS. So all five of my 2TB's are for storage.

so am i the only one running 6 x 3.5inch drives in the microserver? the nexus doubletwin works wonders and has the top dvd drive bay converted to allow 2 more 3.5 inch drives to be slapped in.

bit dissapointed that the newer n54 microserver has a faster cpu that sucks up more power.
its still based on the 45nm tech of the old cpu.
was hoping they would have finally updated it to be 32nm or less and still get the 2.2ghz clock and have same power consumption as the old n36l,
guess we will have to wait for the new atom cpu to be out next year, the 4 core monster looks to be a new standard for small form factor systems that want speed and power savings.

What's the temp of the two hdds in the top bay?

I do the same and got a second nexus doubletwin for my second microserver for when it fills up with drives.

The temp is higher than the drives in the 4 main bays (something like 40-45C vs 34C) , but it's nothing to worry about.

wow 5000 posts.

its amazing really how HP have made something so popular that holds 4 drives + for such a good price
