Good Cheap Server - HP Proliant Microserver 4 BAY - OWNERS THREAD

Almost certainly. Putting a server between your modem and your router makes almost no sense.
I'm joking. it was a typo.

I meant to say that I would run everything on the server, DHCP/Firewall/Shares/you name it, 24/7.

and just use the Router more for wifi/usb storage.

this is what i had envisioned but it is probably not possible

the issue being i cant have wired connection to the computers and be connected to the router.
if there is no way to link the microserver to the internet vwirelessly then i will just use it between the 2 pcs

It probably would be possible, but it would be better to loose the wireless link between the two routers.

I'd keep router 2, but replace router 1 with a switch or with a wireless access point with a built in switch (a reconfigured router could do this). Then connect between them using Powerline adapters. The best option would partially depend on whether the wireless devices could be connected to router 2 or not.

Looks like my server won't be coming to me now until Monday :( Gutted :( I paid extra for Saturday delivery aswell! Just fired off an angry email :p If only OcUK stocked these bad boys!

yes they can that is fine.

ah i didnt think about power line adapters.
seeing as i do not have router 1 yet what would be the best thing to buy for it?

This is getting rather off topic. Post the question in networks and internet connections. Include information about your ISP and any existing equipment.

Is anyone running hyper-v on microserver by USB or installing on to hard drive like ESXi does? Would rather it to just boot to USB that's on the motherboard if possible and use the first 250gb drive for VMs and additional drives for data storage.

I have my little server set up now, primarily for media files, and it is hidden away in the loft, next to my DVR, connected via a Gigabit switch to my LAN.

I have 5x2TB drives fitted and an SSD for Windows 8 Pro x64.

What I have noticed is that when I use RDC (on the odd time I feel that I need to) I find that it leaves the server at the login screen and thus the hibernate function does not seem to kick in.

I have made sure that me (the Admin) is the only user and I have ran Netplwiz to make sure that no one needs a password when logging in but I am still finding the above and, apart from not using RDC, I can't think of how to resolve it...? Or is that typical for RDC...?

Maybe Teamviewer could offer a solution....?

Lmao.. I have lost the keys to mine within 10 minutes of opening the box. I still can't find them.

Luckily it was unlocked at the time

lol @ the comments. The greedy sods expect a budget server to have premium components and features.

Normal service then...;)

The only things I would have expected are? USB 3 & higher official memory support and maybe better RAID.

Presumably any new features like that would require an updated chipset as well as a new CPU. This update is probably just a matter of soldering the faster processor into place.

With the additional processing power they'll be better suited for their target SME market.

RAID10 would have been nice though. For parity RAID I'd still want dedicated hardware.
