Good Cheap Server - HP Proliant Microserver 4 BAY - OWNERS THREAD

Thanks for the input Diablo. Rather than me having to go through three and hitting third time lucky, have you got the name of the eSata to Sata cable that hit the spot right the first time? Now that I've got a little cash in the bank, the sooner I order up, the sooner the money doesn't get squandered on cheap beer and good food!

Technically the maximum is 6 x 3.5" + however many 2.5" you can think you can cram in (can get at least one in on top of the 6 x 3.5" below the DVD drive area), but if you go over 6 drives you need an addin SATA card :)

Actually you can fit a 7th 3.5 in the area below the ODD behind the health LED if you re-route the cables up the side.

It was done by enlarging the hole in the base of the ODD bay and slipping the drive in.

However I think it can possibly be done by drilling the LED mount, bending it up, slipping the drive in and bending it back.

There was even an example of a MicroServer with 9 3.5 drives however they weren't cabled up. 4 in the Bays. 1 below the ODD bay and 4 in the ODD bay.

Is anyone running Win8 Storage Spaces on theirs? I have a windows 8 license and thinking of using storage spaces in parity for my media collection.

Any advice?

It was over a year ago http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/50CM-0-5M...ing_Drive_Cables_Adapters&hash=item35b6eadafe this cable is from the same seller and it is the same colour as mine.

This is probably a stupid question, but how do I install programs on WHS 2011?

I can remote connect into the server and introduce add-ins okay, but what about programs? Do things like Dropbox have to be added using the server itself, or is there a remote connection way to do it? Any time I've tried running an installation program from the server via remote connection it's tried installing it on the connected PC.

hi guys, please help - what is the procedure for unplugging that black cable on the left of the battery with a metal clip on it?! I've done it before but I cannot remember at all how I did it!

Think I'm going to have to find a new way to link my hard drives together :(

I currently have a couple of drives linked together using a program called "Drive Bender", but I forgot it was a trial and now the trial has run out I've lost many permissions on the drive (And logging in as an administrator still hasn't let me change the ownership :().

What's the easiest (Read: Newbie-friendly :p) OS and RAID scenario for this server? I'd preferably like the ability to add and remove drives from the RAID in the future, and I'd like to install programs such as SABnzbd etc.

By the way... Does anyone else's server get seriously dusty? :p I've only had it just over a month or so now and... well the picture will speak for itself :p

Mine gets dusty but not as bad as that. Mine is sitting beside the router in a tiled hall. I would say the carpet has an influence on the dust levels.

Use Remote Desktop.

What's that? :p :D

But seriously... Any suggestions on what OS to go with instead of Windows 7? Must do all the RAID tricks :p

I use whs2011 and drivepool myself not really RAID per se but does a good job of duplicating the my movie/tv collection.
