Good Cheap Server - HP Proliant Microserver 4 BAY - OWNERS THREAD

What's that? :p :D

But seriously... Any suggestions on what OS to go with instead of Windows 7? Must do all the RAID tricks :p

Ubuntu/other Linux.

FreeNAS - a very easy way to manage storage with zfs uber-ness.

I use ubuntu with zfsonlinux to get the best of both. ZFS and all the software of linux.

FreeNAS for the ZFS
Server 2008 (free from webspark) for the software RAID0, 1, and 5.

Depends on how flexible you want the OS to be.

Quick question and apologies if this has been asked before (did do a quick search but couldn't see anything) but am i right in assuming Esxi 5.1 won't see the onboard (software) raid controller therefore an existing raid 1 array will be shown as two individual drives? And there is no hack to make Esxi see the onboard, rather i'd need a dedicated raid controller (ie - adaptec)?

Cheers all :)

Finally got around to setting mine up last night.

8GB RAM went in and detected no issues, flashed the hacked BIOS first time no problems and fully enabled the sata port for 3Gbps and installed WHS2011 from USB first time as well.

Managed to get MSE installed with the /disableoslimit in cmd and managed to get PS3 Media Server installed as a service after a little fiddling with the firewall and a config file to point at the right directory for x64 Java.

Loving it so far, just need to purchase some more storage next week after I've moved to new house and get it all set up and my media copied across.

Couple of questions hope someone might be able to help me with.

I want to use mine to run XBMC on WHS2011 is this possible?

If so what graphics card is recommended that also supports sound over HDMI also I have 5x 2TB drives in this will adding a card be to much for the power supply?

5 Keys for Windows Server 2012 standard edition for free now as well, pretty awesome for home server people.

I have two of these with five drives each, running openmediavault. They are on 24/7 for three days a week, off for four days a week

Do you think these will be using a lot of power?
