Good Cheap Server - HP Proliant Microserver 4 BAY - OWNERS THREAD

AD

From my linksys, I have the following, So the ISP is assigning the 94.202.x.x to my router as an external IP.. so therefore no conflict with mine? Or do I have this wrong..

Connection Type: Automatic Configuration - DHCP
Internet IP Address: 94.202.x.x
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: 94.202.81.1
MTU: 1500
DHCP Lease Time: 5 Min

p.s I am going to owe you a few beers next time youre over :)

edit I connected a laptop to the ISP router and it gave me a 94.202.x.x IP so I guess no conflict on that side. Anything else to do?

So, looks like the SP device may just be acting as a modem. Have you checked the linksys WAN port is the one connected to the SP router and not a linksys LAN port. If that happened then either device could serve an IP even if the linksys has then IP's reserved.

when you have a PC that won't rdp to the server, can you check the actual IP on both machines to confirm they are in the same range?

You need to check with IPconfig from a command window

With WHS 2011, does anyone know if it's possible to backup the OS to a partition?

I've got an old 250gb that I've partitioned to match the 60gb of the OS, but when I try to select it as my backup target WHS insists on formatting the entire drive, wasting a big chunk of space.

Please note that this is for scheduled backup, not mirroring.

Thanks,

Desk

Hi AFAIK the backup will insist on using the full drive.

The backup is incremental therefore it's not just a question of replicating the OS drive, it will back up daily changes so you can restore to any point with periodic full backups.

In theory that's true.

There have been reports of them honouring earlier expired claims so it's still worth a try, but the offer was still ongoing at the time.

Ah okay - Well I'll give it a shot! Wish I didn't leave it so long, didn't think the deadline was so close :p

I did both, using the nexustwin approach as mentioned earlier:

Where did you get your x-swing from? I've been looking for one but can't find them anywhere apart from in the states!

Also what do you refer to when you say the nexustwin approach? (using e-sata and the internal sata port)?

You'll kick yourself when i answer that question.

The next twin approach is using a nexus doubletwin (or x-swing) to put two 3.5" drives in the top bay.

The way i found my second one was to do a search on ebay, for "nexus doubletwin", then save that search as an ebay alert. It then in sent me an email when one appeared for sale. The first was in america and I passed, the second that appeared was in the UK for £8. That seems the best way to get one.

Haha, brilliant! Do you have the two drives hooked up to the e-sata and then internal sata port?

Turns out searching for nexus double twin threw up a few results, i've since brought one from another uk based water cooling company! £10.90 shipped, not too shabby!

Much more powerfull but also needs much more configuration. The hp is a better bet imo. The flexibility for what they cost make it a no brainer.

Last I heard HP were keen on selling it direct, and not offering cashback any longer...

Cashback seems to be back on. Earlier today a competitor had the N40L for £185, an hour later is was back up to £245 then £263, but all with cashback offer.
