Good Cheap Server - HP Proliant Microserver 4 BAY - OWNERS THREAD

I cant get this to boot into unraid for the life of me! I know I have done it before but for some reason it is being a real PITA!

I am clearly a complete idiot. another 2 hours tonight and I found out my mistake......I had formated it to NTFS and not FAT32.

Pie meet face.

My bad - must have lost the plot. It's still the N40L but the price has gone down to £190. With the new one imminent and no cashback I bet they are struggling to shift their stock.

I'd buy another if they dropped to the £130 range.

I read the cashback deals and I can't see any info on the £100 cash back offer. I'm with you, for £90 where do I sign? Have you got a link?

Can't say as its a competitor but the hp cashback is valid to the 31st from what I can and who's to say thats not going to be exteneded yet again....?, so presuming you bought today and got it shiped for delivery tomorrow you should still qualify as the invoice would have todays date on.

edit maybe have to order today for delivery tomorrow so it may cost the extra in shipping but from the pdf form it says

"Product must have been delivered and invoiced between 1st
December 2012 and 31st January 2013."

According to HP's own offers page the cash back ended in December. There is an outdated form kicking around that has January as the end date. They may honour it, but they don't need to according to the T&Cs.

Actually thinking about it I could possibly use one at work and claim the cashback myself :)

Basically would be used as a nas on a SBS2011 server, what would be the best way to set on up as a basic nas? we currently have a couple of dlink 322 nas drives which are pretty slow but do the job, these would be an ideal upgrade if I can get them working ok

Ah right maybe thats the one i'm looking at, yeah i think it was as you say on HP site it states 31 Dec

Just a qiuck question - bought an m4 128gb for the os drive for the N36l
Just wondering if the performance is OK as Ive read it doesnt perform to good on write speeds - better than a spinning drive though
Is that correct - should I get an older ssd maybe

The OS drive will be mostly reads in any type of NAS, Server, Media centre application. The CPU doesn't have enough grunt for heavy work loads so you should be fine.

The M4 is quite a quick drive and as you're limited to SATA II it's unlikely to be a bottleneck.

I have a couple of 64GB M4's one is a media center OS disk and one in my WHS2011 as OS disk, can't fault the performance at all. Much better than a spinning disk and pretty cheap these days too.

Win 8 boots in about 8 seconds and WHS2011 is around 20 seconds .... awesome

You mean the hacked BIOS to allow 3gbps SATA and AHCI on all ports? Google for Thebay and the main thread is on avforums.

Many thanks! Yes, I did mean the modded/hacked BIOS, and not the 'missed' BIOS that my phone's autocorrect thought I was looking for :D

Surely ssd's are a complete waste of time in a server?

Pretty much. OS's like Unraid and FreeNAS are designed to boot off a USB stick anyway. It also makes an SSD a waste of a SATA port!

OK, so my FreeNAS takes a minute to boot. It's only been booted up once, and left on ever since. There's no valid speed argument either - software RAID will happily saturate my gigabit LAN.

Kingston ECC Apple Memory In N40L ?

I have managed to acquire 8Gb Kingston ECC Unbuffered DDR3 memory that is packaged as Mac memory. Part number is KTA-MP1066.

It is sealed & I would prefer not to open it unless I know it will work in the HP N40L.

The Kingston website has following limited info:

Description: 4GB 1066MHz DDR3 ECC Module with thermal sensor
Mfgr's System P/N's: 333-0880 (Apple); MB982G/A (Apple)
Form Factor: Memory Module
Pieces/Unit: 1
Warranty: Lifetime
Harmonized Tariff Schedule
(HTS) Number: 8473.30.1140
Export Control Classification
Number(ECCN): EAR99

I'm hoping the fact that its 1.5v DDR3 ECC & UNbuffered means it is compatible with the N40L.
I'm not aware of any design differences between MAC & PC memory other than ECC/UNregistered requirement that is not standard for consumer PC's.

One thing that does leave me concerned from the manufacturers description is 'with thermal sensor'. No idea what this is.

Anyone know if this memory will work in N40L ?

I started a thread in the graphics section before learning of this thread so il copy paste what i said in it over here for some more answers....

Im planning on ditching my WDTV and upgrading my HP Microserver to replace my WDTV. I figure it is always on so i might as well use it for my media needs as im getting sick of the WDTV. So i did a bit of reading and figured all i need is a graphics card. It already has 2gb of RAM which im hoping is enough for 1080p. Can somebody recommend a cheap graphics card that will fit the Microserver and will be suitable for my needs? It is going to serve as a Audio out too. Im looking to spend as little as possible, £20-30.
Any advice welcome.

EDIT: I will be using Linux and i heard Nvidia cards are more compatible driver wise.

It all depends on your view. 60GB SSD's have been on offer for around £40 which makes them cheap.
Sure you can use a larger drive and then fill the rest with data but I prefer to keep the OS separate from the data so if I need to recover I can disconnect the data drives.
If you have the spare SATA ports then you can tuck the ssd out of the way with some double sided tape to keep the main HDD mounts clear and the SSD only takes a watt or so idle, much better than another spindle.

Also for a home server that gets restarted over RDP it's much better if it boots quickly than the 3 or so minutes it used to take with a 80GB PATA drive.

The N40L only supports a 25W graphics cards to you are looking at base models form either AMD or NVidia

A quick google for n40l graphics finds this:

nVidia GeForce
MSI 1GB GeForce GT 520 [2] (Windows, Linux)
EVGA 01G-P3-1521-KR 1GB GeForce GT 520 (Windows, Linux) [Fits fine, has a fan]
Palit GeForce GT 520 1GB PCI-E 2.0 (Model No.: NEAT5200HD06 (Windows) [Has a fan]
Gigabyte 1GB GeForce GT 520 (GV-N520D3-1GI) (Windows) [Fits nicely and has a fan]
Zotac Sapphire Synergy Edition GT 610 1/2GB [Fits nicely and has a quiet fan]
Asus GeForce GT620 1GB DDR3 (GT620-1GD3-L) (OpenELEC) [Tight fit but easy. Has fan]
Asus GeForce GT610 1GiB DDR3 (GT610-1GD3-L) (Linux) [Comes with low profile brackets (DVI/HDMI and VGA). When switching to the low profile brackets, the VGA connector needs to be removed (has PCB connector) as the ribbon cable is not long enough to fit it in the N40L. Fits perfect, has fan]
