Good Cheap Server - HP Proliant Microserver 4 BAY - OWNERS THREAD

Hi. Been using the server for a while but on Sunday I was just Watching a film and I noticed smoke coming out of the server. It was coming from out from the top area where the 250gb hard drive is placed. I had a look and it looks like the molex to Sata connector has burnt as well as the connector on the hard drive bay at the top. HP did say they well send out a replacement however I can replace.the molex to sata connector but was wondering.if the connection on the actual bay itself could be replaced as it does have screws at that point n seems it could be taken out.

Depends what you're using it for. If it's going to be a nas then yes, it's a waste.

Is an SSD a waste on this? If not, will 64gb be enough for windows home server 2011?

I wanted to use all four of the bays for my storage (4x2TB) on my Microserver and I then installed a Crucial C300 64gb in the Optical bay and to get most out of the SSD speed I bought a PCI-Express Startech Sata 3 Controller Card. I have WHS2011 installed on my Microserver, I find the WHS dashboard slow to open on a SSD and it's even slower with a hard drive.

You have to make cfg.ini on a USB stick to install WHS2011 on a HDD/SSD less than 160GB. See this post on this thread http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showpost.php?p=20770600&postcount=2

I am looking to upgrade the RAM in my box from the stock 2GB to either 4 or 8. I'm going to give Windows Server a go on it. A few questions then?

- Should I go to 8 or economise with 4?
- I would like to get ECC RAM. Is it worth it?
- Do OcUK sell any suitable ECC ram?

CD

If you can afford it go 8GB and get the ECC. OcUK didn't sell it when I last checked a couple of weeks ago.

I went ECC as I'm using it as a NAS with ZFS enabled. Last thing I want is data corruption with the way ZFS works so the small amount extra for ECC was a no brainer.

I would go for 8, cheap enough now days.
I picked up the Crucial XMS3 8GB (Which arrived today) Just waiting for the server
If your using it as an actual server for important company data i would go ECC, otherwise theres no real reason too.. you don't use it in your normal desktop so why bother in here!

Just wondering if this would be powerful to stream 1080p ect plus host say a teamspeak server? just trying to find ways of making it more than a glorified NAS :P any other suggestions for its usage? current approach is NAS w/1080p playback and thats about it (still seems a cracking piece of kit for the 56 pounds paid! (redeeming VAT)

I'm gonna get ECC Ram then. It is just my home server but it is going to run 24/7 and I want it to be as stable as possible. Do I want Registered ECC or unbuffered ECC? Something in the back of my mind says registered won't work. Is that right?

Since OcUK don't sell these I hope linking to these is okay:

Was really tempted by one of these the other day when they were going for £85 after the cashback. Would love a 'proper' NAS to replace my WD MyBook World, problem is it all starts to get a bit expensive once you add HDDs, WHS etc. Maybe later in the year!

I'm contemplating one of these when I move house in a few weeks, to use a media server/download box.

How would it cope with transcoding video files on the fly when I want to stream to my old xbox running XBMC?

I haven't tried but I very much doubt these would be fast enough for any sort of video transcoding.

Finally grabbed one of these (N40L) and have a few questions! I'll be migrating my current desktop sab/couchpotato/sickbeard to it and using it just as a server. Already have an N36L in the lounge for HTPC duties.

Anyone run the OS off the internal USB? I would be using W8 probably. Speed isn't an issue really it'll be a 24/7 server I just want all 6 SATA available for HDD's.

I know people have done that for that exact reason, but not sure on W8. Should be possible I guess.
