Good Cheap Server - HP Proliant Microserver 4 BAY - OWNERS THREAD

Both times it couldn't get past the 'setting up devices' screen during installation. And with Windows installed it would do the same thing on the Windows loading screen after POST. Disabling the NIC in the BIOS stops either from happening.

Thanks for that. Have HP acknowledged the problem? Presumably a firmware update is needed?

By the looks of it, it's still at the we have noticed it and I assume some people have informed HP stage. It doesn't strike me as a big problem to fix so hopefully when HP get on it, we won't have to wait long.

To any of the Unraid gurus in here... I can't believe the length of time it takes to "preclear" a disk?! I think I'm sold on the OS and it'll do exactly what I want, but I just wondered about the preclearing - how many cycles etc. would you recommend doing? I guess I can just pre-clear my 2 2Tb disks at the same time for a few days but damn, I was looking forward to getting Unraid working so it's a bit of a shame!

Also lots of people talking about Unraid being slow for file transfers etc. Is it really that slow? Or are people being overreacting a little? I'm not expecting blistering speeds but the way some talk about it makes it sound really bad!

Hmmmm... this page links to the latest firmware for the card, but I ran it, and it says my card already has that version (i.e. it was already at the latest firmware):

I haven't tried the 2012 R2 install yet. Has anyone tried with the release from 18-Oct? This may have slightly newer drivers...?

Preclearing is a bitch but you can run multiple sessions at the same time. Will still take ~24 hours for a 2TB disk. I have a 4 disk array of 4TB drives so I do feel your pain. I only run the defaults which I think is 1 pass. At least you can be sure that your disk is 100% fault free before adding it to the array. I had a 6 disk array of 2TB drives previously for around 3 years and I never had to touch the box in any way and I am sure the preclear routine was a lot to do with it. If you haven't already, a good read here.

Speeds are not great as I said before but on my 4TB drives I get 40-50mB/s writes which I don't deem terrible. I guess it depends on how much and how frequently you expect to write to the array vs read. I read at ~90mB/s.

Thanks for the advice... Fortunately I still have my old server at the moment (which currently has a 1Tb NTFS drive that has my media on it at the moment)... So I can set of my 2 disks pre-clearing at the weekend or something, and then once that's done plug in and mount the NTFS drive and transfer the files onto the array that way...

I guess speeds aren't going to compare to FreeNAS which I've been trying lately but I don't mind so long as it's good enough for streaming to a media centre and transferring files to now and then

Any reason for doing more than 1 pass on the pre-clear? Based on what I know about how it works I don't really understand what 2 passes will tell you that 1 pass doesn't

I've been messing around a little tonight with lights out on WHS2011, tried in the past with little luck but i'm finally getting somewhere I think, I've installed updated network drivers, enabled hibernation and checked WOL is set in bios, ticked the boxes in the LAN properties as in the guide from Lights out, will go into hibernation when I set the time in calander but for the lift of me cannot get it to wake up, do I need to do anything on my pc to wake the N40L?

You might want to check 'Allow Wake Timers' is enabled in advanced power settings.

Does the N54L support WOL? Going to have a play with AutomateIt on Android and would be interested in setting up a trigger to wake my HTPC when my phone connects to my home network.
