Good Cheap Server - HP Proliant Microserver 4 BAY - OWNERS THREAD

These still on offer?

Not as far as I'm aware. The latest offer was to clear the last of the G7 stock ready for the (much more expensive) G8 releases.

You can pick up an N54L for £150-180ish though, which is still pretty good for what you get, considering an empty 4-bay NAS box will set you back £120-150 and these are a lot more versatile.

So from the sounds of it the likes of the N54L probably won't feature in a cash back offer again? I've seen the deal several times and always meant to pick one up but looks like I missed out on the deal :(

recomendations for RAM? I want to take this up to at least 8GB, reading that it's pretty much pointless with the stock amount of ram

Pointless for what? I think it probably depends on what you're doing with it... 2GB is plenty for UnRAID for example, but if you're using FreeNAS or something with ZFS then 1GB RAM per TB of disk space is recommended, and if you're running VMs etc. then at least 8GB or even 16 would be useful

Finished installing my picopsu and I'm loving it. Massive noise difference as you would expect. Definitely recommended if you have it running in your living room.

Hi mate,

which one did you get? I am thinking of the 120, I had 4 x 2TB HDD, DVD and 1 SSD.
Did you need extended connectors?

Have you done any mods to the original 120mm fan?

Thanks :)

I myself did this mod and installed a Scyhe Fan with controller exactly as described here. The main sound though was from the PSU fan not the main fan, but everything helps the fan is now spinning quietly at around 600 rpm.

I do recommend you guys looking into Xpenlogy which is a Synology port OS. Its great for the Microserver best OS I have seen or used so far on it.

^^ I've replaced the PSU fan and the 120mm fan and the noise difference is pretty significant - much cheaper than buying a picoPSU as well

I used the same noiseblocker fans for both as described earlier in this thread somewhere, can get you the details if needed

Is there anywhere that still does the cashback offer? I'm tempted to get one to use when doing MCSA

Think you may be out of luck :( the current cashback deal is over and I don't think it will be coming back this time... The N54L appears to be the last of the cheap microservers too as HP try to push the Gen8 instead (it might feature in some cashback deals in the future maybe, but it's not quite as cheap)

On the plus side the Gen8 seems a bit more versatile (for one you can swap out the CPU - I've seen an interesting blog post where a guy picked up a Gen8 and swapped out the i3 for a decent Xeon :D)

Anyone using Lights out with WHS 2011? I thought I had it working ok, it would go to sleep at midnight and then I could use WOL via clicking on the server icon in my computer, but for some reason that has gone and the only way to wake it is by hitting the power button, I thought I had it set to wake at 4pm and sleep at midnight but doesn't seem to work properly

I think I'm moving over to xbmcbuntu or Openelec but I need a graphic card that will send sound over HDMI and good enough for 3D MKV files.

Can anyone point me to one please.

The AMD 6450 is one of the more popular choices for an HTPC GFX card. Can do all of the above.

AMD 6450 works well.

Thanks guys :) I will order one asap. Openelec looks good but which build I get?
Just tried OpenELEC-Generic.x86_64-3.2.3.tar and nothing, think I will try them all till I find the right one :D

I used the file OpenELEC-Generic_OSS.i386-3.2.3 and it starts Xbmc on boot :) going to test it out now.

edit=I gave openelec and xbmcbuntu and both are for having a front on the NAS but both are a
pain in the ass to setup. I will stay with XPEnology for now as that can transcode to any device on the go ect

If you could that would be great, as in the silentreview article the fans used there have been discontinued
