Good Cheap Server - HP Proliant Microserver 4 BAY - OWNERS THREAD

Has anyone manage to install windows 8.1 with the standard nic?

As it stands currently, you can get 8.1 and server 2012 R2 to install successfully if you disable the on-board NIC. If you don't then they both hang during install. But if you want to use it on a network you will need a 3rd party PCI-e NIC for the time being until updated drivers are released by HP for the on-board NIC.

From what I've seen on other forums, HP have said they are releasing an update sometime in December but they aren't guaranteeing that it will work as officially they aren't supporting 8.1/2012 R2 on any G7 microserver.

Most annoying as I have some 2012 R2 licenses but can't use them as I want 2 NIC's and a PCI-e raid card :( Stuck on 2012 for now

It is hit and/or miss.

Disabling the onboard nic will work majority of the time but there are still random blue screens and other things that go off with Server 2012 R2.

However it is much easier to run ESXi and 2012 R2 on top

I just use Yatse remote on my android phone and it works perfectly, you even get all the album art on your phone/tablet.

This server is for the media server that my old man will use, his phone is an old nokia and anything more complex than a remote would be beyond him :)

Got a nice 2.5" to 3.5" adapter for the Microserver, saves having the SSD hanging off the backplane. :)

currently have FreeNAS on there, but thinking of moving to WHS (more user friendly interface, more familiar with windows)

Is it possible to run WHS from a USB or am I going to need to utilise another drive? I don't mind if I need another drive as I have the 250gb that came with the N54L in there still

I'll be upgrading my RAM too...8GB would be enough for WHS yeah?
