Good Cheap Server - HP Proliant Microserver 4 BAY - OWNERS THREAD

I'll be upgrading my RAM too...8GB would be enough for WHS yeah?

Well it depends exactly what you're planning to do on there but just for file and media serving duties yes it'll be plenty. I have 8GB in mine and rarely see it go above 3 during normal everyday usage.

You're going to put five 2.5" drives in a microserver? That's a strange choice. 3.5" are cheaper and I'm not sure the processor could handle a ssd array. Is it for acoustic reasons?

Heh funnily enough, none are for my micro server. I have a couple of 2.5" drives (an SSD and a regular HDD -- laptop HDDs are much quieter than 3.5" ones) in my PC, kind of just sitting in the slots (it is a Dell Precision T3600 workstation), so it will be nice to have them properly locked in place. And I have an SSD in my Proliant ML110 G7 with a fully enclosed plastic adapter (Icy Dock), but for ventilation purposes I much prefer the open design of these metal HP ones. And a couple spare, they are pretty cheap!

Can i also point out my experience with the cheap £5-10 USB sound cards, with the mic & speaker jacks has been pretty poor, i think i had 3 eventually give up within a few months. I thought it'd be ideal for a cheap media player, VGA & USB sound, meant no video card and the sound cards were as much as a HDMI GPU so not worth considering. Unfortunately they were useless.

If they're a reasonably reputable brand or more than cheap chinese tat, you should be safe, and as mentioned they're recognised as a sound card when plugged in.

Currently thinking to add an additional stick of 8Gb to run alongside the existing 2Gb (10Gb total), can be either ECC or Non-ECC.

Should cost around £45-50 and have the following on a short list:-

Kingston Technology KVR1333D3N9/8G 8GB DDR3 1333MHz CL9 DIMM Non ECC Memory Module
Kingston KVR1333D3Q8R9S/8G 8GB 1333MHz CL9 DDR3 ValueRAM ECC Memory Kit
Integral PC3-10600 DDR3 PC Memory - 8GB DIMM RAM

Does this all sound okay?
Thanks

I've got one of the 8gig Integral sticks in my N54 and it's fine although I'm using it on it's own rather than with the original 2 gig stick as well.

Only £50 this time, but still better than a poke in the eye! You can also get a 3-year warranty for effectively free, so pretty good all around.

Have a worrying problem. My N40L appears to randomly delete the logical drive RAID 1 array. Forcing me to create a new logical drive and restore all my data from backup.

Has anyone else experienced or heard of this before?

Damn that e place :p

Will give it a day or two to see if anywhere else offers them with the cashback.

My current self build server is having abit of a nightmare with plex timing out, done everything I can think of doing but I think its time for an upgrade
