Good Cheap Server - HP Proliant Microserver 4 BAY - OWNERS THREAD

Depends what you're after. If you need applications that can make use of the extra CPU grunt then yes. Otherwise no especially as the N54l uses about 10% more power.

Considering the power of the N54l being so small anyway and being able to upgrade for little cost

Having a faster cpu will only allow for more longevity

So your point is moot.

10% power saving over a year will be around £2.60 over the 54l :p

I've been reading this thread and am a bit punch drunk!

I am tempted as I have a DNS-323 and want to update my "NAS"

Can I do this:

- Install an SSD (how please?) and an optical drive to the "optical" port and install Windows 7.

I have a spare copy of win 7 and an "old" 128GB SSD that has an old Win 7 installation on - I presume I will have to reinstall this OS. I saw this on one post BUT cannot find it and don't understand how to connect the SSD "in parallel" to the optical drive?

OR re win 7 can I install this from a USB stick onto the SSD and connect the SSD to the optical drive port and do not use an optical drive?

- install 2 (of 3) 2GB PC3 10666 OCZ DDR3 memory taken out of my PC when I upgraded the memory.

- install 4 other SATA drives of any size up to 2TB each in the 4 remaining bays

Thanks for any words of explanation - don't want to miss this offer!

Flash the bios when you get it

get a molex to sata power connector

connect the SSD to the ineternal sata port

Enable AHCI is bios

Boot from USB drive and install windows fom USB

Job done.

Add 4 x 4TB drives if you want

you can install windows 7 from a usb stick on to the SSD, and have the ssd connected to the optical disk drive bay, but from memory you'll need the modded bios.
have a look at :

install windows from usb :

a note on the memory, it seems it can be a bit selective on its memory.

hope this helps a little

Thanks - if I don't want to do this can I install an SSD (presumably in non ACHI mode) onto the "optical drive" SATA port and install Win7 on that drive - or doesn't the optical drive SATA support a hard drive / SSD please?

Thanks, Mel

I have today purchased an M500 120GB SSD and 2 x 4GB Crucial Ballistix Sport to go in my N54L. Should have the server tomorrow and the other bits midweek.

Total outlay just over £290 before cashback.

What do you intend installing where? i.e. where will you plug in the SSD?

Can you advise (using sign language if necessary) where you bought the HP Proliant please - there seems to be one cheap place an several at £100+ more - before the £100 off!

Thanks, Mel
