Good Cheap Server - HP Proliant Microserver 4 BAY - OWNERS THREAD

Thanks - if I don't want to do this can I install an SSD (presumably in non ACHI mode) onto the "optical drive" SATA port and install Win7 on that drive - or doesn't the optical drive SATA support a hard drive / SSD please?

Thanks, Mel

There would be no point installing an SSD and running in legacy IDE mode.

Just flash the bios. Its easy and works 100%

What do you intend installing where? i.e. where will you plug in the SSD?

Can you advise (using sign language if necessary) where you bought the HP Proliant please - there seems to be one cheap place an several at £100+ more - before the £100 off!

Thanks, Mel

Thats breaking the rules of the forum. Have a look on the net..I found it in less than 3 seconds

I plan to install the SSD into the ODD bay. I will be flashing the BIOS to open that port up to proper speeds. Then I will use the 4 normal bays for 1 x 1TB and 3 x 2TB drives and the external eSata port for a DAS with a few more 2TB drives in.

Going to be installing Windows 7 (I have an external DVD drive I intend to use for this rather than USB as I have the proper retail Windows discs) and Plex Media Server. It will have a monitor attached, but will generally be controlled via Teamviewer.

Whilst I think about it I actually will now have a spare SSD, does anyone know where I can get a little dock to go in the ODD enclosure that will allow me to install 2 x 2.5" drives but connect them both to the one SATA port on the microserver?

So did I but it has a few negative feedback comments and I have not used them before - generally loyal to OCUK but they do not sell the HP microserver.

Sorry - missed the bit about 4TB drives - didn't see that?

Thanks, Mel

Just want to advise against this as it's *rediculously* slow.

I appreciate flashing the BIOS isn't for everyone, but if you're going to use an SSD you'll pretty much have to :p

So if I don't want to flash the BIOS, I use one of the 4 sata ports for the SSD and the other 3 for good old fashioned HDDs.

Is there a max TB that can be used

3 x 3TB OK ??

Thanks, Mel

Has anybody spotted the news today that HP are no longer going to be allowing you to download official BIOS updates for any of their products if those products are outside warranty (a greedy cash grab to try and force people to buy the extended warranty)

It's not the biggest deal in the world, I admit, especially since the best BIOS for the N54L et al is not an official one anyway, but still

Yeah I spotted this the otherday when updating an old ML110, also on the pair of new DL360p's we've got at work, dont think HP will be the last people to do it either tbh...

Is the N54L a worth upgrade over the N36L? I have my N36L setup with Ubuntu, SickBeard etc Does struggle with transcoding via Plex

I suspect it'd still struggle with 1080p - my N40L is ok with 720p but a LONG way from being able to send 1080p.

I'm hoping to get a G8 microserver at work soon for a vSphere lab so I may do some testing there to see if it's beefy enough for 1080p

What OS you running? I stream 1080p over the net and to my TV\phone\pad with no problems. In fact the cpu doesn't reach 40%.
This with N54L and synology

Let me know how you get on with the G8 and which CPU model you end up with.
My N40 is naff for transcoding and I want to be able to do two streams at once ideally as I have two ATV's, 720p would do...
