Good Cheap Server - HP Proliant Microserver 4 BAY - OWNERS THREAD

I suspect it'd still struggle with 1080p - my N40L is ok with 720p but a LONG way from being able to send 1080p.

I'm hoping to get a G8 microserver at work soon for a vSphere lab so I may do some testing there to see if it's beefy enough for 1080p

I assumed that would be the case – I can squeeze out most media files via transcoding them to my iPad however for anything @720p + to my TV I use my MBP.

G8 looks nice, wonder if there’s any cashback offers :D

What OS you running? I stream 1080p over the net and to my TV\phone\pad with no problems. In fact the cpu doesn't reach 40%.
This with N54L and synology

What type of file, mkv / avi etc? If its transcoding with only 40% CPU usage then that’s really good!

Let me know how you get on with the G8 and which CPU model you end up with.
My N40 is naff for transcoding and I want to be able to do two streams at once ideally as I have two ATV's, 720p would do...

Are you able to output a single stream from the N40L?

Really tempted to get HP ProLiant G7 N54L MicroServer. Looks cracking. Forgive me for not reading 251 pages, but how well do these cope running as a DC and File Server? I only have 3 PCs that I'd connect to it so I can teach myself more about server 2012.

Something doesn't sound right there, playing a 1080p file on my ipad has my Q6600 at 80% on all 4 cores, a 720p (exact same movie) is only about 11%.

If I am getting that transcoding to the iPad on a Q6600 I cannot see the N54L doing it at 40%.

I am still in the process of building my N54L, but will retest the same files when it is done and update.

I'm using Plex on my ATV3's, Plexserver on my N40L and even with the ATV set to 480, it plays but the cpu on the N40L is being hammered, I'll reconfigure the other ATV tonight and see if it'll play both streams at 480, it'll do for now as 2x480 is better than nothing, plus I'm trying to test worse case, the actual chances of both playing HD at the same time are slim, as long as films are only played/paused I might get away with it, as soon as you start fast forwarding it has a paddy and just carries on polaying from where you were when you hit FF rather than moving through the film and then playing from where you actually FF'd to.

My N36L has just packed in :( red HP logo + no video, cleared cmos still nothing

Going to get a N54L.

Has anyone opted for the 3 year additional warranty?

Can I use the RAM from the N36L? Is 16GB supported with the unofficial BIOS?

Thanks!

Yeah I think the hardware is pretty much exactly the same except a slightly faster CPU.

I've got 16GB in my N54L with modded BIOS and it recognises all of it.
