Good Cheap Server - HP Proliant Microserver 4 BAY - OWNERS THREAD

For the cost difference you might as well go for the 160W.

Keep in mind that neither will fit directly into the ATX connector on the Microserver board, you'll want a 24pin atx extension cable. There are lots of options for where to mount the pico, I was a bit worried about it grounding so put it in a plastic project box. You'll also need to consider a molex splitter and maybe a 4 pin atx extension cable for the Pico 12v barrel input depending on where you want to put it.

You dont need the 20-24pin atx extension cable unless you are running a graphics card in the server. Just plug it into the 20 pins it fits into, the other 4 pins are for power for display card if fitted. The pico psu will fit in the connector and the board can be push back into the server with no problem. You do need some molex splitters though as each harddrive has its own molex connector. I have the 120w version running off a 19v 120w dell power brick, its powering 4 harddrive and a dvd drive. The power brick is warm but not hot with that load.

Hi

My Internet is due to be upped to 152Mb at the end of the month and my N40L just about manages 100/110Mb so was wondering if it is worth upgrading to a N54L for the extra cpu performance?

Anyone running a N54L & sab and able to max there 120Mb+ connection?

My N40L
6GB ram
7 hard drives (500GB-3TB)

@kefan77

I have a 90w running 4 2tb 1 x 1tb Hard Drive an ssd and Adaptec raid controller. It runs off a 120w brick though. If I were you go for the 120W more than sufficient unless installing graphic cards.

@numnutz

Silence :) and a slightly improved power usage.

This might be a stupid question, but what's the main advantages in moving to a Pico PSU?

Cheers

There is no noise from a pico PSU though the harddrives in my microserver are by far the loudest things in there ...not that its noisy but as ive already done the PSU fan mod I cant see it being any quieter than ive got it right now unless they bring out 4TB SSD drives at a decent price ..... now that would be nice :)

Quite tempted to upgrade to the N45L (owner of a N40L running ESXi at the mo). The new dual core CPU grabs my attention as running Plex transcoding in a VM at the moment is impossible.
I see the max memory is still 8GB can this be hacked anyway to run 16?

I'm running 16gb in my n54l

I'm tempted to upgrade to the new Fujitsu TX100 server which has £100 cash back on at the moment. Quad core with large expandability suits my small VMware lab

I'm still testing Plex on a N54L currently. Will post a result when I run it for a bit longer. I watched 30 mins of a 1080p film last night with no stutter. I need to do more testing with resuming films though.

I think plex is very good. seeking is fast, works great streaming to my phone/tablet/pc. The UI bugs me though, too cluttered. Dont need the 'deck' or umpteen different ways to view my movie collection. I'll be happy when i find a decent skin that strips all that mess out. The lack of mouse support in the windows client is annoying as well, but not a deal breaker.

Agree with that. I skip right to my library.
Well plex running on in a VM is actually working out very well. I'm going to start moving over my whole library to the VM from my main PC. Hopefully the Microserver will be cheaper on regards to electricity.

Hi all
Just setting up a Microserver for a guy in work - after my glowing recommendation (shot myself in the foot)
Hes a mac guy so has no real clue about windows so was just gonna put on vanilla windows 7 for him
I have a n54l with Ubuntu Server on and thats great for me but dont want anything too complicated for him to run - hes also planning on putting xbmc and plex on too

So I personally think Windows 7 would be a great start

Would you recommend WHS 2011 or 2012 in this case?? My guess is that if this os was put on it will generate more support /help calls!

Thanks for any info

If you have a license for server 2012 use that...it's very much like whs v1 with essentials installed
