Good Cheap Server - HP Proliant Microserver 4 BAY - OWNERS THREAD

Whilst looking at some other forums i saw someone say they do work, but only with the modded bios being used and also only work in the 4 bays of the microserver and not with the sata controler that they had but in the PCIE slot. il link it when i can find it again.

Also just orderd one of these. :)

Hmm well the PCIE slot in mine is full of a gfx card! If they can't just connect to the built in controller then I think I'll have to stick to 4tb :(

What are people finding is the best OS for these? My brother has told me to put Ubuntu on it, but I've also got 2008R or 2012R2 if they would be a better choice?

I just want it to operate as a NAS really so I can load it with all my video, pics and music and have it run Plex and be able to link up with Sonos.

I've got licenses spare for pretty much all versions of Windows/Server so will take a look at that. Would I not be better off running Server 2012R2 as opposed to Windows 8?

I'll let one of the server gurus correct me if I'm wrong, but for basic domestic stuff I don't think the server versions offer anything over standard Windows 8. It's only when you move into domain type stuff that they start to separate.

Then use OpenMediaVault.
Try it out, http://demo.omv-extras.org
Or grab the iso and chuck it in a VM and have a play.

Worth it from an n40l, transcoding from PLEX to a chromecast and music.

just a heads up to make sure but i see there are some places doing the n54l with £30 cashback making this around £100 again. cant link to it but if you go searching you end up with server plus, warenty ;0)
between 1 & 30 september.

might pick me up another one of these.

HP ProLiant MicroServer G7, AMD Turion N54L (2.2GHz), 1x 4GB-Udimm, Diskless SATA HDD, 150W Power Supply, 1 Year Parts Only

Just putting feelers out there to see if anyone has 4gb of the ecc ram that comes with the n54l that they want to sell.

I want to go to 8gb without breaking the bank.

Mine has arrived :D and have ordered the silent fans as recommended by maddness, gonna order a few 4tb WD Reds and a USB 3 card on pay day to complete the setup.

I can't decide between Windows 8.1 straight on the SSD or ESXi on the USB and have a couple of VM's on the SSD.

With ESXi, can I have ESXi running from the on board USB, store and run the VMs from the SSD and also leave the 4x drives as "physical drives"? By this I mean, can I take it out of the micro server and plug it in to a PC to recover files if anything happened in the future? So just a straight up NTFS drive that would work on other machines.

It is mainly going to be used as a file server to stream media around the home and be the main backup for all desktops/laptops but having ESXi would mean I could play with a few different operating systems with ease.

Do you guys reckon I'd be asking for trouble to put one of these in a non ventilated sideboard? I can't imaging the misses would want it on display and just looking at options.

Mine's under the stairs which is all closed off, the only ventilation is the gaps around the door which are pretty small. Temps stay very well though.

You would need some airflow...drill holes in the back of the sideboard?

It's a brand new sideboard so want to keep 'mods' to a minimum. It'll obviously have a hold big enough for the power cable and a single cat5e cable but that's it. The alternative is to have it upstairs but I'd have to use power line adapters for now.

Hmm could be an option then thanks. I'd only be running x2 HDDs so that may help.

N54L arrived and I installed the FreeNAS img onto USB. It booted up and I had to assign an IP address. I did this and also changed gateway and DNS address. However, I can't access the web GUI after the screen asks to try the chosen IP. Any ideas?

FreeNAS GUI is on standard httpport 80 so no need to specify the port.

As already mentioned check the console to make sure you have the correct network config
