Good Cheap Server - HP Proliant Microserver 4 BAY - OWNERS THREAD

What are the chances of running one of these with full disk encryption (usually recommended powerful processor + AES-NI?) + a couple of KVM virtual machines - nothing to heavy?

We stick these on remote sites with 6GB DDR, 2x500GB HD, TPM and remote access card. Run 2008 R2 Core with Hyper-V hosting a DC and a FAP server. They're fine for that, handling around 30 users or so on average. 2008 R2 Core base OS is encrypted with Bitlocker and we run the guests on top of that.

a FAP server.

Hi,

What are the chances of running one of these with full disk encryption (usually recommended powerful processor + AES-NI?) + a couple of KVM virtual machines - nothing to heavy? Is anyone using KVM/debian on these?

I have a noisy G6 tower ATM but looking to replace.

Thanks,

It neither has a powerful processor or AES-NI if that helps. It's intended for embedded systems really.

Thanks for replies. I don't *need* fde just got it at the moment on G6 - for the price it does seem worth a chance.
Seems like the current stock is going down quickly in any case.

Anyone know how these performance at converting MKV,AVI etc to MP4 for Plex? After a ballpark time figure of say a 4Gb file.

Plex already supports them. Are you having trouble playing them?

I know, but I'm streaming them over the internet to Roku's, iPhones etc, so need a container that is supported by most. The N54L doesn't seem up to the task of transcoding on the fly, so was wondering what the conversion time was like on typical file sizes.

Hey folks,

I have an N40L with 8gb ram, WHS2012 and use it as my HTPC running XBMC. Whilst it has done the job ok for a few years I think it's time to upgrade it. I've a mix of 2 and 3tb drives, which I'm slowly going to upgrade to red 4tb (can the 40L take the 6tb?). I've been having a few issues with xbmc having stuttering sound as well as it crashing fairly regularly. I've also had a lot of driver issues on WHS (mainly gfx and remote device) I've bought the cheap intel ssd 40gb and I was planning on installing a spare win7 I have.

So questions!

Will the 40gb ssd coupled with the N40L processor run win 7 ok? I see the ssd has a slow write time, will it be ok?

Will it take the 6tb red hdd?

Is it worth replacing the N40L with the newer N54L? Since the N54L is cheap at the moment. Is the 54L that much quicker?

Thanks for looking, any help would be appreciated!

The 40 GB SSD will work beautifully. It is not super fast, but compared to any spinning disk, it has thousands of IOPS vs low-hundreds, is silent, cool (the opposite of warm) and low power.

I had an N36L and replaced it with an N54L during the last cash-back, with the argument (to myself) that the N36L would become my emergency warranty replacement in case the N54L ever failed. The performance improvement was noticeable, but not massively significant.

Passmark scores of the 2 CPUs:

N40L: 964
N54L: 1419

So 47% faster. Not bad, but it's not going to blow you away either.

Quick question, I found the deal for £99 and am just about to pull the trigger.

I have a Samsung TV that plays just about all media files from a USB, so I presume it does not need transcoding etc, would I be able to stream the same file from the server as I would from the USB without he server having to do any hard work? I understand these are not the most powerful systems going about and am looking to mainly use it as a file server.

I was thinking about just having Windows 7 as the OS and using mapped drives on the desktops/laptops around the house, is this the easiest way to do it, or are there any other suggestions?

Just whack a low profile GFX card in it (£15-20) with HDMI and plug in directly. Works a treat.

Take a look at XPEnology it's small but very powerful has all the mobile apps you could wish for.and it doesn't have the bloat ware of windows.

From finding out Monday & researching this microserver, I've ordered 1, with a 64gb scandisk ssd, and the 3tb red.

I was so close on ordering the Synology 4bay last week, till I read this thread

Should be here tomorrow ;-)

Sorry I should have mentioned it will also serve a second TV in the bedroom (can also play files from USB) and my desktop along with laptop and the Mrs laptop will use it to access photos/music etc.

Just had confirmation that my microserver and HDD's have arrived at home. I know what I will be doing this evening!

Going to pimp Munin a little more with a couple of graphs from my two servers running it

Waiting for a couple of components from eBay then I'll be able to integrate room temperature into the system temperatures graph :)
