Good Cheap Server - HP Proliant Microserver 4 BAY - OWNERS THREAD

Well that's cool, there's no way of passing through hard drives on hyper-V without vt-D is there?

Yes.

To pass a physical drive through to a Hyper-V guest you need to open disk management, right click the drive then "offline" it. After that you can add the physical disk to a Virtual Machine through Hyper-V manager.

I converted my server to Server 2012 R2 yerterday for all of half an hour before it got on my nerves and wouldn't allow me to run Debian Guests correctly

Awesome! Much thanks :)

Just re-set up Xpenology with my 3TB storage drive set as offline, now to start the task of transferring all my media/games across. Had some issues with mapping the network drives onto my Windows PC (server could see them fine but PC couldn't connect) I ended up mapping them using the Synology Assistant tool).

If I need to add another disk i can just slot it in, set it to offline, add it in Hyper-v and add to Synology via the software. :D

Sounds about right, although I've not personally used Xpenology

Hey folks,

I've a N40L that I use as a HTPC. I'm looking to get a new TV cabinet and I'm wondering how much ventilation it needs? The cabinet I'm looking at has only 2 open parts which I need for my amp and sky box. I was planning on putting the server into the cupboard part of tge cabinet, although I was going to cut out the back of it both to improve be ventilation and for the cables. Would this be ok?

Those of you that use it as a HTPC, where do you put it?

Thanks!

It does not produce a big amount of heat but if the cabinet was totally sealed i'd imagine the HDD's would start to get quite warm but if you cut out the back as you said you were and allow the rear fan to exhaust it will be fine.

I had my N54L with 3x HDDs in a closed cupboard for a week. When I opened the doors the wall of heat was impressive!

I used to have mine in an under-stairs cupboard which was about the size of a floor standing kitchen cupboard. I can't say it ever felt more than a few degrees above ambient room temperature. I ran it 24/7 as a media server with the door cracked open for ventilation.

How big of a drive do you need for the OS on one of these, assuming it was just for fileserving/plex media.

I assume i should have the os on a separate drive to the data, so assuming a linux server would i be better off getting some sort of small ssd for the OS and having my WD Reds for the data?

For size 60GB for OS would be more than ample

I'm using no more than 20gb with Debian

Gen 8 £119.99 after cashback now.

 So anyone who bought one before the end of march only gets £30 cashback but if you buy one now (a week later) you get double the amount back...

Why can't they be consistent with these cashback deals, FFS.

Or in other words: I missed out on the extra cashback by a week. :(

Just what I was waiting for! Purchase complete :D

Had been holding off, as figured they'd likely increase the cashback at some point soon. No doubt it'll probably drop again around June/July time, but I've held off long enough.

Wow prices came down fast! Def tempted now sat £120 is a bargain.

How much better is the Gen8 then the N40L? I'm using it as a HTPC with Kodi and possibly plex in the future. I see it only has 2gb ram included, assume more ECC is going to be expensive??

16GB of ECC is £120ish (2 sticks of 8GB). If you only want an extra 2GB I'm sure you could find someone selling the stick that came with it on the MM.

So basically 16GB of RAM will be as expensive as the whole unit :p

The Gen8 has some PCIe card restrictions vs the older models though, I think, so if you're running a GPU then you might have issues.
