Good Cheap Server - HP Proliant Microserver 4 BAY - OWNERS THREAD

Have a look at the Syba SATA III 4 Port PCI cards. Got it running under esxi 6.5.

Which model works well in ESXi? I just did a google and apparently Syba has lots of models with different chipsets. And hardware RAID1 works fine on it right? Prices seem good though.

they've been heavily discounted the last 3+ years!

I thought Gen7 was previously heavily discounted for a long time, and Gen8 discounts only started a few months ago? Guess I was wrong :p

I'm not using it in my Gen8, thats retired now and sat on a shelf collecting dust, the P222 is in my Frankenbuild and is hopefully being replaced as long at the P410 with the new f/w works in Frank...

Doing more with VM's so the Gen8's 16Gb RAM limit was being restricting me, plus Frank is a decent sized case so I can stick a decent GPU in there and do RemoteFX...

I notice quite a few people reference the iLO feature that comes with the HP ProLiant servers.

I was wondering, out of all the people that are using the Gen8 for home setups, HTPC/VM Labs, how many people have purchased a license and how many people have just ended up using the free trial? People who have bought the licenses, where have you bought the licenses from, and is my understanding correct that they only come with 1 or 3 year licenses?

It's not something I've ever thought of using for my Gen8 as I mainly just use it as a HTPC so it doesn't really get a lot of use (compared to running vms etc..), however the amount of monitoring it can provide has got me slightly curious.

I used the free version that comes with it for a long time, then when I started messing more with VM's I ended up getting a license from eBay..

The free version will probably do most of what you want as a normal home user, the only reason I ended up buying one was to stop it kicking me off of the remote console after 30 seconds or so...

I've just bought my first Gen8 and I'm about to submit my cashback claim but I have a quick question. In the instructions, it says-

Attach proof of purchase (reseller invoice(s)) to the claim form, with qualifying products and HPE part codes circled and make copies for your records. Serial Numbers of all servers purchased must be supplied.

Perhaps this is a dumb question but am I to take that to mean that I should circle both the part code (i.e. 819185-421) and the product information which said code appears within?... it just seams kind of redundant to do both.

I also have a second, somewhat more technical question. I understand that the fan is quieter when RAID is used, even if it's just the boot disk in it's own RAID 0. I plan to use FreeNAS so RAID is a no no but I've read in a few places that unless a disk is placed in RAID, it's left untouched by the controller and is essentially in AHCI. Can anyone please provide proof of this one way or the other?

I'm just debating to sell my gen8 or keep it just for playing about, originally it was a NAS drive but never used it (google drive instead) ... now I play with an os or something every other month and think I should just sell it

Selling is hard unless you want to pretty much give it away, they can be bought new for cheap enough, then add to that the cashback... :/

I'm not an expert either but my understanding that it's either Raid or ACHI. I have 4 drives not Raid'd and the microserver operates in ACHI mode. Drive 1 is an SSD with OS on; other drives (2, 3 and 4) are Red NAS drives (4 or 6TB). OS loaded from USB DVD.

Surely it depends how much you're selling it for?

As you say, you can pick them up brand new for £125. The problem comes when people are trying to flog them for ~£100 still, i think most people would rather pay the £25 and have a brand new one with warranty as well.

Indeed, when you're trying to sell one loaded with an E3-1260L, 16Gb RAM, P222/512, iLo Advanced, optical drive and the 65w heatpipe and people are expecting it to be £300.......

@Doctor McNinja When RAID is enabled, you can use the sata port on the mobo to boot from, when set to AHCI, that sata port is not bootable. There is a method of making server boot from the disk which uses that port however I think it might just be a Windows bodge. If you're wanting to have AHCI enabled, you will have to use Bay 1 to host your OS then use Bays 2,3,4 for storage (and what ever storage you have left after installing on the OS drive).

In need for some help, I have a G7 with the original 250Gb O/S drive and a few 2-3Tb drives setup under DriveBender. I haven't keep on top of data management so even after a little data pruning it's full up.

Can anyone link me to a decent guide that will cover:

a) How to clone the O/S drive and move it to either an SSD or partition on a new larger drive.
b) Add a fifth drive (3-6Tb) by enabling the extra sata port

Many thanks :)
