Good Cheap Server - HP Proliant Microserver 4 BAY - OWNERS THREAD

running WS2012, any ideas on what sort of security / antivirus I should run? Many such as ESET have packages but cost a small fortune. Looking for something cheap (possibly a key off fleabay) and light to run.

edit: only one I can find cheap, works with WS2012 and fairly decent is Webroot.

I am learning so much with this little machine, just as a hobby, really sparking a interest with this stuff, setting up VM's, playing around. All around my data lol, which I have a backed up offsite. I currently have WS2012 (as above) with Hyper-v enabled. However now I am playing with xpenology as a VM, and going to give freenas a try (although dont think the zfs file system is for me). Just to play about, however I do like WS2012. I do also like the idea of ease of access through a web gui with the likes of xpenology / synology. I am thinking I need a first layer of some kind of VM install, then the ability to play about / setup whichever VMs I want. is vmware or something equivalent what I want? or is having WS2012 and a bunch of VM's running off that fine? Like I say, I find this fun to play around with. I don't think I will ever settle as their is so much to play around with.

I need to do some kind of reinstall anyway as the OS drive I have right now is a mechanical drive, and purchased an a budget, I have a SSD I want to get in.

Am I right in thinking that Kingston HP DDR3 KTH-PL316E/8G 8GB 1600Mhz ECC Unbuffered RAM Memory DIMM is compatible with the Gen 8? Second hand but tempted to get two of them if they'll work.

Yes. I have two of them in my Gen8.

Upgrading my N54L this weekend, a little sad as it's been a terrific machine for £150. However I want to future-proof my rigs for the next few years so it's time.

I've done the same recently. Sad to let it go but was holding me back. Sold it on ebay for more than I paid for it though :)

Can anyone please guide me on how to install WIndows on a SSD drive and then use my 4 3.5" slots for data? Its not very straight forward ti seems

Should be simple enough. Plug the SSD into the SATA port on the motherboard, you will need a molex to sata power adapter. I think you might need to enable the onboard SATA port in the BIOS, but other than that, the Windows installer should see the drive and you can install it from there.

Many thanks, awaiting the Amazon delivery guy to bring my 500GB SSD drive. Another question please.

I ve always used Windows 7 / 10 , but is there any advantage in using Windows Server OS instead of a Desktop OS? I see cheap Windows Server License on the bay.

It’s not that simple unfortunately as it depends on what mode you using the raid controller. If you want it in AHCI mode then you can’t boot off the ODD. You need to get a little creative by having a USB or MicroSD card to boot to which will then load the OS from the ODD. If you google it there is a detailed walk through on how to do it for Windows.

Raid is a little simpler as you just make each drive an array. As I understand the downside is that the drives won’t ever spin down?

I am not really worried about losing data as I will be using Drivepool, I currently dont use drivepool scanner but intend to start usin git which meanst I need AHCI for smart data to be available to drivepool in windows, Is this correct?

Windows server comes a bit more bare metal, and you install the services that you require for your needs, plus it has a ton of extra features. Depends on your requirements really. I use Server 2016 as I quite like Hyper-V for VM's.

What are you upgrading to hardware-wise?

Perhaps mine must have been in RAID mode then, I never had any problems booting either way.. it was a few years ago I set it all up now.

Just moving from a Gen7 to a Gen8 Microserver.

I have managed to get the SSD to boot from the ODD port and windows server is running fine, I just need to add my disks from the old box.

Question, Do I need to setup my hdd disk as raid 0 for the OS to see them in Windows? I have drivepool and would like to recreate my drive in windows.
