Good Cheap Server - HP Proliant Microserver 4 BAY - OWNERS THREAD

In the HP Gen 8 Bios, where do you go to see what hard drives it is picking up? I've got an SSD I'm wanting to use for the OS but when I get to the install OS screen, it is only picking up my WD red drives. I bought a 4 pin (male) floppy to sata adapter so it could be that which isn't working.

The bios doesn’t have the hard disks, it is the b120i controller that you need to select on boot to see which drives are connected. In the bios you can select if the b120i is in raid mode or just AHCI. If AHCI then you can’t boot from the ODD/Port 5 if there is any other disk installed. There is a workaround where you remove all the Hdds and install into the SSD then make a boot usb or mSD card which will then boot into the SSD, then you can put the hdd in.

The quickest way I've found, and if you don't need the PCI slot for something else, buy a HP P212 HBA from somewhere and use that and not the built in HBA.

Cables are the same so it's plug and play, you also get full speed across all four bays not just the first two of them.

When I set mine up ages ago Windows / HP server won't see SSD on bay 5 when there are any drives in bays 1 - 4 when set up as ACHI (I think).

Ah right will take a look thanks.

So is it worthwhile removing all other drives when installing the OS and just have the SSD connected? It's Server 2012 I'm trying to install if it matters.

Right this is where I'm at. I've removed all my WD Red drives leaving just the SSD connected via the ODD port. If I press F11 for boot options I get:

Which option would boot to b120i?

I then press 3 for USB boot which has my Server OS ISO on:

By trying to install Server OS like I would normal Windows, am I doing it completely the wrong way?

You need to go into the bios and set the raid controller to AHCI mode, it should just detect the drives itself then.

Doh! Thought I had done that earlier on but seems not. Installing Server OS as we speak. Thanks for the help.

Can I leave it set to AHCI if I'm planning on using storage spaces for raid?

What are you going to use it for, RAID/Storage spaces are both function specific, if you just want space then look at Stablebit's Drivepool...

I had a RocketRaid 2710 available so I used that. I know it's not as good but there was zero extra cost....

If you don’t want to use the hardware raid then yes leave it in ACHI mode and you can use either storage spaces or drivepool etc.

The issue you’ll find is that as soon as you put another drive into the server it won’t boot from the SSD. The work around is to copy the boot sector onto a mSD or usb stick which points to the SSD. If you google gen 8 SSD boot you should find a really detailed walk though on how to do it, which worked great for me.

I have 4 x 3TB drives and am going to use it for some virtual servers and general storage. I was hoping to have some function of redundancy though. I'll check out Drivepool.

I'll look into copying the boot sector method then. Thanks again.

Got my server up and running with Server 2012 R2 but had to go down the booting from mSD route due to AHCI.

I'm having trouble installing HyperV though. The install fails and just tells me to check event log but can't see anything obvious at fault.

Was there a driver CD with this? I know Windows can sometimes be clever enough to install missing drivers, but I'm missing a 'Base System Device' driver. Wonder if that's causing Windows features not to install. I've looked on HP Website for my OS, and there's 59 drivers to chose from. I don't even know where to begin...

Edit: I'm stilling using the G1610T at this point. Could HyperV install be failing due to it not supporting hyperthreading?

Glad you got it up and running. As far as I know the G1610T doesn't have HyperV, but someone with more knowledge should be along to confirm shortly! I believe there is also a slightly different method for creating the boot mSD if you want to use HyperV as well....

As for the drivers if you scroll up the thread someone has posted a link to the latest SPP and BIOS update files which should install everything you need.

Think I've found the post you mean. Good Cheap Server - HP Proliant Microserver 4 BAY - OWNERS THREAD

Have you tried them yourself? As I've downloaded the file from the link and it is an ISO file. I can easily create a bootable usb drive to install them if needed though.

Interestingly I went to install what should be the newest firmware from here (second link taken from post I quoted before) and I get the following error message:

The software will not be installed on this system because the required hardware is not present in the system or the software/firmware doesn't apply to this system.

iLO Channel Interface driver is not loaded.

Press 'Close' to exit Setup.

Hopefully installing the SPP will resolve this.

I used the stand-alone iLo interface to install the firmware, and just used the iso to make a bootable usb to install it all. It installed all the required drivers.
