Good Cheap Server - HP Proliant Microserver 4 BAY - OWNERS THREAD

Yes it's a better controller

P410 can have up to 1gb of cache and can have flash backed write capacitor rather than relying on a battery.

My P410 arrived the other day and before I attempt to install it I want to check I do it right. From what I can gather, the card will plug into the PCI slot, then the mSAS 'HDD (3)' cable will then plug into it. Since the card has two mSAS ports does it matter which one I use? Then because I have my OS on an SSD, I'm going to need a mSAS to SATA splitter cable for data.

Anything else I need to know or worry about?

What's the latest version of the HP Proliant Microserver to use as a HTPC?

Also which low profile GPU is recommended for 4K60?

Thanks.

Owned one of these for a few years now, kept it pretty standard as only store media on it, dont run VM's etc (at the moment). It has windows 10 installed and I mainly use Kodi on a few android boxes around the house, use SQL on the server so each box knows what i've watched etc. Been thinking about moving over to Plex so i can stream to my phone etc when outside of my home network. Plex seems to be moving forward more than Kodi too, is that the general concencous?

Anyway my server spec was the standard CPU, 16gb RAM and 4x4tb WD reds and an SSD for OS. Ive just upgraded to a E3-1245 v2 Xeon, with the elusive bigger heatsink from HP part number 832667-001. The TDP for the processor is 77w and the heatsink is rated at 65w but i've been running this for a few days now and even in this heat (Server states in 28c Ambiant Heat) its running fine and core temp is showing 42c max temps at the moment, but havent run any proper stress tests. I've bought the new processor and heatsink for the potential transcoding required if i go the plex route. Plus being a geek i fancied an upgrade just for the sake of it :D

should have took some pics but the heatsink fits and looks lovely in the server. Nearly covers half the board now!

Can anyone help me get hold of a bios update for a N56L?

I don’t care if it’s a modified version from a trusted source or the final official version.

I’ve just taken the server out of mothballs and have realised that it never got the bios update that fixes the cable unplugged issue with the onboard NIC. It did have an Intel NIC installed to get around the problem but I’d rather use that elsewhere.

Thanks

Looked again today and found a download link that's still live.

I've got a Dell T20 which replaced my N56L. I'd like to add more drives to the T20 and was considering replacing the case.

I've just had a thought about reusing the N56L for its drive bays.

With suitable cables I should be able to connect the backplane of the N56L to the spare port on the Dell PERC H310 (IT mode) in the T20.

I can't see why it wouldn't work.

Fairly sure there's a post in this thread where someone's hooked a couple of additional N54L chassis to another and connected the SAS cable to a RAID card, giving 12 bays... My search skills aren't that great right now, just coming off the the back of an accidental tactical nap.
