Restrepo
About a military outpost in the most dangerous area in Afghanistan.
Not so recent but good: Bus 174
About a hostage situation on a bus in Rio de Janiero.
Man on Wire
About a French tightrope walker who broke into the twin towers while they were nearing completion, and walked across a wire between them using no safety equipment.
Not recent, but one of the best documentaries I've seen is Cocaine Cowboys. It's about the cocaine traffickers from the 1980's in Miami, and how that drug money built the city.

+1 loved this to pieces, the guy is amazing.
I've also been told to watch The Man From Earth, but don't think its that new..
Yeah King of Kong is good, I really enjoyed it - but I got the impression they were over-stating and tried to imply more animosity between Wiebe and Mitchell than there really was and I read that they played around with the continuity of events to do so and give it more suspense and create a sort of pro-westling rivalry style feel to the film - sort of to portray Mitchell and Wiebe as heel/face characters battling it out. Still liked it though and would definitely recommend it,
Definatley going to take up some of the suggestions in this thread, don't watch nearly enough, retrospectives of events i find facinating.
Last year the bbc showed micromen, if you've an intrest in the story of early computing, or were lucky enough to live through it with youth tinted glasses, then it's something you must see.
