good space ship game?

any good spaceship game around where you get to fly the ship and also upgrade it by buying stuff etc?

last game i played was one called elite, awsome but getting to other solarsystems and stuff was just too difficult.

need a good game where you do up the ship and can buy stuff like shields etc and guns and what not.

anything good out there that will run on vista64?

Why not try Frontier and First Encounters, the 2 sequels to Elite.

Both have graphics that are (extremely) rubbish by todays standards, but the gameplay is still brilliant.

I-War 2. Massive massive galaxy to go around randomly if you like (once you have the tech) with 3 highly customisable ships. Good plot and some trading/pirating to boot.
Combat physics are great too. Normally in a space game you have a max throttle which your ship can reach. That makes no sense in space since if you have fuel you should be able to accelerate as long as you like. In iwar2 the ships computer caps your max throttle so that you dont go so fast that you loose manoeuvrebility (ships mass and momentum come into play unlike most other space games) when turning. It also slows you down to a stop when u set it to zero (otherwise you'd keep zipping along at the same speed forever). You can override these controls and turn them off. So if you are being pursued for example you can get to max speed and override the computer and go much quicker than normal, then spin the ship 180 and travel backwards keeping your nose and weapons on the pursing ships. You can even control the thrusters controling your x,y and z axis movement separately.
Then there's the lds drive which lets you travel at close to the speed of light at max power in real time through a solar system (at this speed you could literally slam into a planet or moon you're headed to if not careful). And the capsule drive for traveling between systems.
Anyway babbled too long. Suffice to say its great and like the first one should have sold far faaar more copies but didn't :(

X3 is a visually amazing game, but a big warning, its very slow to get the ball rolling. if you do get it, dont trade space fuel unless you are confident. i didnt know fuel would be illegal to trade untill my ship got blown out of space by police patrols.

this free add on pack sounds interesting though.. might persuade me to start it again as a pirate. :D

Best space games ever were Conflict Freespace and CF2. And whilst not to remenisce too much, X-Wing and Tie Fighter bring a nostalgic tear to my eye..

More suited to what you want though is Freelancer. Xseries are just too long and dull for my liking.

EVE-Online is good, 5-6 years of my life playing the game and still love it (inc beta before you ask)
X3 is more direct control of ship (elite style), good game but really REALLY big time sink (more than eve, long periods of doing NOTHING but waiting for stuff)
X2 is X3 but different, worth a play as it can be had cheap
Freelancer etc, give it a go, cheap ish

eve online (aka mine online) ive been playing for a couple months now, not touched a single asteroid for mining so all you nay-sayers can go to hell :p

Currently flying around in a nice battlecruiser armed up with massive railguns and a bay full of drones that are indeed lethal (t2 med and lights for those in the know) and blowing stuff and people up is a whole lot of fun :D

people who mine all day and get fed up don't deserve to play,
eve is kinda sandbox, you make the game!

You got a battlecruiser under two months? How'd you manage that?

i could be flying a battleship before the end of this week if i wanted to, thinking about it i could have been flying one a week ago at least. BC's arent hard to get the skills to pilot, only a few ranks in cruiser and youre set. Im pushing through to finish my learning skills (all rank 4+ currently but want mostly 5) and making my t2 drones even more awesome.

The best thing is making all the big things go boom :D

EVE Online is a very good MMORPG although I don't play it just now as I don't have the time I think it needs to dedicate to it to get the most out of it. Like x3 and Freelancer it's mouse controlled so I don't think that's what Cyber-Mav is after?

At the moment the only thing I can think of is SWG MMORPG with the Jump to Lightspeed part, which offers joystick controls and upgradable ships. Unsure if you'd want to consider it due to the history the game has?

It's a shame that "traditional" arcade space combat games seem to be ignored at the moment as I'd love to see a new X-Wing/Tie Fighter or Wing Commander game.
